Wildfires

Wildfires – California

Thousands of people were ordered out of their homes Monday after wind-whipped wildfires burned dozens of buildings across northern California.

Described as “unprecedented” by authorities, the largest blaze — which is known as the Rocky Fire — had torn across Lake County, north of San Francisco, growing to almost 60,000 acres, or 93 square miles, by Monday afternoon.

Wildfires – Washington

The Wolverine Creek fire, burning 36 miles northwest of Chelan, has grown to nearly 25,000 acres. The fire is near the town of Lucerner and grew steadily over the weekend.

The fire, sparked by lightning on June 29, is burning in remote, extremely steep terrain. About 120 people are fighting the fire. A huge plume of smoke from the fire could be seen from the Seattle area on Saturday morning.

Wildfires – New South Wales, Australia

A bushfire fuelled by strong winds continued to burn in the Wentworth Falls area of NSW’s Blue Mountains on Sunday. Hundreds of firefighters battled the blaze, assisted by helicopters dropping water onto flames that could not be easily reached by vehicles. Although no homes are directly threatened, an alert has been issued for residents to monitor the situation for changes

Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity

Raung (East Java): The eruption continues. Ash emissions have decreased, while satellite-detected heat emission increased during the past days. This could suggest that activity is now more effusive (lava flows) than explosive (ash emissions) in style. This morning, an ash plume rose approx. 1 km above the volcano and drifted 100 km to the SW. Indonesia’s Volcanological Survey VSI mentioned yesterday that seismic activity rapidly decreased. Whether this means a near ending of the eruption remains to be seen.
