Japan restarts first nuclear reactor – 4 years after Fukushima

Amid substantial public opposition, Japan on Tuesday restarted one of more than 40 atomic reactors that were taken out of service in wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. Kyushu Electric Power Co. said it had restarted the No. 1 reactor at its Sendai plant in Kagoshima prefecture about 600 miles southwest of Tokyo. The facility was expected to start actually generating electricity by the end of the week and return to full output by early September, operators said.

Nuclear power provided about 30% of Japan’s energy before the Fukushima accident, the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. After the meltdown, Japan took its reactors off-line, and the government led by Prime Minister Naoto Kan announced a plan to phase out nuclear power by 2030.

Since then, Japan has had to make up for that lost generating capacity largely by burning coal and natural gas. Japan, which has little fossil fuel of its own, must import that material, and power costs have risen substantially for businesses and households.

Disease

Chikungunya – Spain

On 3 August 2015, WHO was notified by the National IHR Focal Point for Spain of a case of chikungunya infection in the city of Gandia, Valencian Community. This is the first time that an individual with no history of travel to a chikungunya-endemic area tests positive for the disease in Spain.

Dengue Fever in Delhi, India

With nearly 120 dengue cases reported this season, fears of a possible outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease have gripped municipal corporations and health officials. In their latest report, the civic bodies have reported 66 fresh cases in the past one week.

Wildfires

Wildfires – Western USA

A wildfire that erupted near a destructive blaze in Northern California’s rural, rocky hills expanded farther. The blaze had burned 9 square miles by Monday afternoon, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. It broke out several miles away from the community of Lower Lake Sunday afternoon and quickly spread. Evacuations have been ordered for the fire that ignited Sunday and doubled in size overnight.

Authorities couldn’t say how many homes were evacuated or how many people were told to be prepared to flee. Containment of the fire about 100 miles north of San Francisco was not in sight.

Firefighters and air tankers battling the bigger nearby fire were reassigned to attack the new blaze. No homes have been destroyed and no injuries have been reported.

Meanwhile, firefighters have nearly surrounded the larger blaze that started about two weeks ago and burned 109 square miles. That fire destroyed 43 homes, but all evacuations have been lifted. Students in the Middletown Unified School District could start classes next Tuesday, but it might be later depending on where the fire burns.

— Overcast skies and higher humidity helped fire crews get a preliminary line around a wildfire in Lewis County, Washington. Evacuations have been lifted and there have been no reports of injuries. While the cooler weather is helping firefighting efforts, crews are keeping an eye on the thunderstorms that are in the forecast for later Monday.

— Fire crews are working to control a blaze that has spread across nearly 2 square miles on Oahu, Hawaii, and led to evacuations. No structures were damaged Monday. Part of Highway 270 closed when a pile of timber caught fire.

— A fire that started nearly three weeks ago near St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park has burned nearly 7 square miles and is more than halfway contained.

Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity

KSinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): According to a news article in the Indonesian press, volcanologists monitoring Sinabung believe that magma supply to the growing lava dome has recently increased. This will likely result in more and larger pyroclastic flows that can threaten a number of villages that so far have been unharmed. These include Pasarpinter Gurkinayan, Simpang Sibintun, Perjumaan Batukejan, Jembatan Lau Benuken Tigapancur, Pejuman Tigabogor, Pentumbes, Jeraya, and Kutatengah on the SE slope.

Colima (Western Mexico): Explosions remain frequent and sometimes intense. Ash columns rise up to 2 km from the crater.
