In the South Indian Ocean: Tropical Cyclone “Carlos” (04S) has formed east of Madagascar on February 4, 2017 as the fourth named tropical cyclone of the 2016/17 southern hemisphere season, the fewest on record since 1928. Carlos could affect Mauritius and Réunion as a significant tropical storm. The current forecast track takes it right over Réunion on February 7.


Malaysia – Residents from several houses in Brinchang were forced to flee their houses following flash floods yesterday. Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue chief Mohd Haziq Hazmi said water rose to one-meter high before subsiding, leaving a thick layer of mud. He said a number of houses in Kampung Lama, Tringkap were also affected by the flash flood, but none of the residents were evacuated.


Chile Wildfire Emergency ‘Mostly Under Control’

President Michelle Bachelet says the worst wildfires that Chile has suffered in its history are now mostly under control. Bachelet said Saturday that for the moment there are no new blazes reported “and the rest are mostly controlled.”

The arrival of rains and dropping of temperatures in recent hours have helped stop the fires from spreading.

Statistics from the forestry agency say that across the country flames have blackened over 1 million acres during the current fire season that began on July 1.


Leprosy in Nepal

The Palpa District Public Health Office (DPHO) reported this week on 13 new leprosy cases in the central Nepal district, according to a Kathmandu Post report. About 16 cases are reported annually in the district.

The number of leprosy patients taking drugs has reached 13 in the district so far and of them eight patients have completed drugs, the DPHO said.

According to the WHO, there were more than 200,000 new cases reported globally in 2015.
