Aftershocks hit Greece

Two strong aftershocks have struck the Greek island of Kos within minutes of each other, sending startled residents and tourists scurrying away from homes and restaurants. A tremor measuring a preliminary 4.4 magnitude struck at 8.09pm local time (6.09on BST), sending restaurant customers scurrying toward the middle of the town’s main square, as far away as possible from buildings. Sixteen minutes later, a second 4.6-magnitude tremor struck, the Athens Geodynamics Institute reported. The first tremor had its epicentre only 13 miles northeast of Kos at a depth of 6 miles.

New Zealand – A ferocious storm has buffeted the lower South Island of New Zealand overnight (Friday-Saturday), with three states of emergency declared in Christchurch, Timaru and Otago and the city of Dunedin accessible only by air. The southern city of 120,000 people was cut off by road after major landslips blocked access. Small coastal communities on the Otago Penninsula are also cut off. Livestock in Canterbury and Otago were urgently being moved to higher ground with numerous rivers rising to near historic levels and threatening to burst their banks. It is the second largest flood of the Taieri River in Otago on record.

Iowa, USA – Heavy rains Friday night and Saturday deluged the community of Sumner, and basement flooding and sandbagging were taking place in several Northeast Iowa communities. As much as 10 inches of rain fell near Fredericksburg during the stretch, according to one calculation. Fairbank and other area communities also were hard hit, many receiving 5 or more inches of rain Friday night and Saturday.


Hawaii mumps outbreak

Hawaii state health officials reported an additional 18 confirmed mumps cases, bringing the total to 172 in 2017 to date. Twelve of the cases are from Oahu, four are from Kauai and two are from Hawaii Island. Nine of the new cases of individuals are adults.
