Storms and Floods

Jordan – Amman – the Jordanian capital was hit the hardest by a weekend of torrential rains and floods across Jordan. At least 13 people are reported to have died in the floodwaters. According to previous civil defense statements, 28 citizens have drowned in rain-induced floods across the kingdom in the last four months.

Afghanistan – Flash floods have swept away dozens of homes and inundated handreds of acres of farmland in western Farah province, an official said on Sunday. Meanwhile, heavy snowfall has closed roads connecting districts to provincial capital in Afghanistan’s central-eastern province of Ghazni. Between 60 and 150 centimetres of snow has fallen in Ghazni, the provincial governor’s office said in a statement. Kabul was also a witness to heavy snowfall over the last couple of days. Meanwhile, flooding was also reported in southern Kandahar province following heavy rain.

Balochistan – On Saturday, it was reported that life is crippled in Balochistan amid torrential rainfall and snowfall in different areas of the province, particularly Chagai district. Security forces have been moved to assist the civil administration in rescue and relief operations for flood victims in various parts of Balochistan. Approximately 1,500 families have been rescued in Dureji, Lasbela, and Qillah Abdulla areas, while rations have been provided to 3,500 families in the rain-affected areas.


Wildfires – Australia

Firefighters in Victoria are rushing to build containment lines around fires burning east of Melbourne before “gusty and erratic” winds reach the area on Wednesday.

At least nine buildings, including homes, were destroyed in two out of control bushfires at Bunyip and Yinnar South in West Gippsland on Sunday, and an emergency warning was issued for a third near Dargo in the high country in east Gippsland.

There were 19 fires burning out of control in eastern Victoria on Monday, scattered through the east Gippsland and highland areas, and 23 schools have been closed due to fire risk.


Equine Disteper – NIger

Just as strep throat can run rampant in elementary schools, strangles, the “strep throat” of horses, caused by a different Streptococcus bacterium, Streptococcus equi sp equi, is highly contagious. It is also known as equine distemper. According to the African news source, Vanguard, the contagious bacterial infection has killed more than 4,000 donkeys in northern Niger.

Rift Valley Fever – Mayotte

In a follow-up on the Rift Valley fever (RVF) case increases on the archipelago of Mayotte, 63 confirmed cases of RVF as of Feb. 21. No deaths have been reported.

Leishmaniasis – Libya

The Libya Health Ministry says that the country has seen some 5,000 cases of the parasitic disease, leishmaniasis in the past six months, according to a media account. “There are currently 5,000 patients who are being treated,” said the head of the centre for disease control at the health ministry of Libya’s UN-backed unity government.
