In the Indian Ocean: Tropical cyclone 02a (Vayu), located approximately 419 nm south- southeast of Karachi, Pakistan, is tracking north-northwestward at 08 knots.

USA – Torrential downpours have flooded huge swaths of the Midwest and the Southeast since last week. Rain over the weekend triggered flash floods in several states, including Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Florida. In some states, more than a month’s worth of rain fell in a day. Beyond flash floods, rivers rising more slowly in places like Iowa have threatened drinking water. In Illinois, flooding this past week has closed roads and bridges. Atlanta broke a single-day rainfall record on Saturday with 4 inches of rain. Nebraska issued a second disaster declaration last week in response to the floods. These rains have come atop flooding tied to the wet winter in many parts of the country followed by a wet spring. The ongoing flooding has already led to several deaths and, once the water recedes, will exact a huge toll on the economy. One of the biggest concerns is the impact of floods on crops like corn and soy, which are mainly grown in the Midwest. Waters have already damaged some fields, and the soaked soil is preventing new crops from being planted.

UK – Intense thunderstorms and showers are expected cause further flooding and travel misery in the next few days across southern and eastern areas of England, forecasters have warned. After more than a month’s worth of rain fell in a day on Monday, swamping roads and railway lines the clean up efforts may be hampered by further downpours.

Wildfires

Wildfires – California, USA

There have been nearly 240 wildfires in California over the past week, causing one evacuation and two power shut-offs while fire fighters and utility companies attempt to prevent another catastrophe. Since the start of the year, 1,349 wildfires in the state have burned 12,247 acres of land, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as CalFire. Of those fires, 178 have been on federal land. There have been 236 new wildfires fires in the past week alone.

Disease

Measles – Comoros

The Ministry of Health in Comoros Islands has confirmed a new measles outbreak, coming in the aftermath of the tropical cyclone that devastated the country in April 2019, according to a World Health Organization report. Through June 1, a total of 66 suspected measles cases have been reported, of which 16 were confirmed.

Ebola – Uganda

The current and 10th Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the DRC began in August 2018 and their were fears of it crossing neighboring borders all along. This week, it finally happened as the Uganda Ministry of Health reported a case in a 5-year-old boy who traveled from DRC.
