Russia – At least 15 people have died and 13 others have been missing after a dam collapse at a gold mine in Siberia. The dam, on the Seiba river in the region of Krasnoyarsk, burst after heavy rain on Saturday.

Niger – Floods in southeast Niger have forced 23,000 people to flee their homes since early October, officials said Saturday, threatening a new humanitarian crisis in a region already wracked by Boko Haram Islamist violence. Heavy rains have caused the Komadougou Yobe river that flows through the semi-desert Diffa region into Lake Chad to burst its banks, inundating villages, flooding fields and damaging crops. Two villages near the city of Diffa were “completely submerged” and 2,500 households have been forced to move.

Global Warming

Climate Change Affecting New Zealand

Climate change, pollution and fishing are causing irreversible damage to New Zealand’s marine environment and putting many birds and mammals at risk of extinction, according to a new report from the nation’s Ministry for the Environment.

The report said New Zealand’s coastline, which stretches for about 15,000 kilometers, is also under increasing pressure from development and shipping. Agriculture, forestry and urbanization are increasing the amount of sediment, chemicals and plastics flowing into the oceans, and contaminating the coastline, it said.

The report said 90 percent of the country’s seabirds and about a quarter of its marine mammals are threatened with extinction, and that 16 percent of New Zealand’s fish stocks had been overfished.

The report also confirmed that New Zealand’s sea temperature had risen and was consistent with the global average. It also found sea levels were rising faster than before.

There was a warning, too, that New Zealand could expect more frequent marine heat waves, similar to those in 2017 and 2018, and ocean acidification.

Wildfires – Australia

A new bushfire is threatening homes in NSW’s scorched north. The blaze ignited at Tubbamurra, north of Armidale, on Saturday and has quickly moved east towards about homes at nearby Backwater. The region has hosted the worst of all blazes in NSW so far this bushfire season. Two people have died, dozens of homes have been destroyed and 3100 square kilometres – equivalent to a quarter of the area of Greater Sydney – has been scorched since July in bushfires in the state’s far north coast and New England regions.
