Storms and Floods

Tropical Storms – Roundup of Tropical Storms:

There are no current tropical storms.

USA – Persistent heavy rains soaked the Mississippi River watershed in the first two months of 2020. The result has been bulging rivers from Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico. Near-record flooding has brought two weeks of misery to the states of Mississippi and Tennessee, and high water is expected to arrive next week in New Orleans.

Indonesia – Crop failures could be seen across more than 10,000 hectares of agricultural land in West Java due to the recurring floods that have hit the province over the past few months. West Java Agriculture Agency head Hendy Jatnika said on Friday that heavy rains had inundated 13,234 ha of the province’s 166,715 ha of agricultural land. If the floodwaters did not recede within the next three days, the farmers’ rice crops would be ruined, he went on to say. Agricultural experts have warned that climate change has begun to affect food production in parts of the country, and have urged the government to introduce programs to mitigate the impacts.

Moscow’s Warm Winter

Russia’s capital Moscow, which for the past months has largely been deprived of its traditional seasonal covering of snow, has seen its warmest winter since records began, the state weather service said on Saturday.

The head of Russia’s forecasting centre Roman Vilfand told the TASS news agency that the average temperature in Russia from December to February has been some 2.5 degrees Celsius (4.5 Fahrenheit) warmer than the previous record of minus 2.8 degrees seen in the winter of 1960-1961.

He said such differences between records were extremely rare. Records began 140 years ago in Russia.

China – China has announced its latest data on the coronavirus outbreak, reporting 42 new deaths. That takes the death toll in China to 2,912, and worldwide to more than 3,000. Officials said there were also 202 new infections, the lowest number since the end of January.

South Korea – The KCDC says four people died overnight and 476 new cases of the virus were confirmed. In total, 22 people have now died from COVID-19 in South Korea and 4,212 people are infected.

Indonesia has announced its first two coronavirus cases while Iran reported 11 more deaths from the virus, bringing its death toll to 54 – the highest outside China.

The number of people infected in Italy – the centre of the outbreak in Europe – has jumped to 1,694, while the number in France has increased to 130.

With the outbreak deepening, the staff at the Louvre in Paris voted to close the iconic museum.

The Czech Republic, Scotland and the Dominican Republic have confirmed their first cases.
