Kenya – Several people are feared dead and many more are missing after more heavy rainfall caused flash floods and landslides in parts of western Kenya. Local media reported that the rains swept away several houses and a police post in Chesogon trading centre between the counties of Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot. The current was strong enough to uproot trees and sweep them along in a fast-moving tide.

USA – The prediction center received more than 250 reports of possible tornadoes, high winds, hail and storm damage from east Texas to south Georgia on Sunday afternoon and evening. A suspected twister resulted in one death in Marion County, Mississippi. In south Georgia, the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office said lightning struck a rural home during a storm early Monday, causing a fire that killed one person. A suspected tornado overturned a mobile home in south Alabama late Sunday, killing one person. Monday, four tornadoes were reported in north-central Florida, along with several reports of wind damage.

Space Events

Lyrid meteor shower

The annual Lyrid meteor shower officially started up Thursday and will remain active for about 10 days, with the peak viewing night coming late Tuesday into Wednesday morning. It can be seen starting at 10 p.m., but this shower’s perfect for early risers, as the hour or two before dawn is probably the best time to spot the “shooting stars.”

The Lyrids are bits of rock and dust left behind by the comet C/1861 G (Thatcher). Each year around this time, the Earth drifts through a cloud of debris from an earlier visit by the comet — its most recent trip through the inner solar system was in 1861 — and those particles collide with our upper atmosphere at a speed of about 27 miles (43 kilometers) per second.
