India – Torrential monsoon rainfall has triggered deadly flooding and landslides in the southern state of Kerala, India. At least 26 people died after heavy rain triggered a landslide buried houses in Rajamala in Idukki district late on 07 August. Teams of rescuers are working in the area, with over 40 people thought to be missing. According to IMD figures, nearby Munnar recorded 229mm of rain in 24 hours to 06 August. Other areas of the state have also seen heavy rainfall over the last few days.

Niger – Nineteen people have died and over 50,000 have been affected by flooding in Niger since June this year. As of 30 July, 9 people had died, 20,174 people affected and 2,244 houses destroyed. The worst hit areas were the regions of Maradi and Tahoua, with respectively 13,667 and 4,173 people affected. Flooding has continued, in particular after a period of heavy rain in early August.

Ethiopia – The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that more than 30,000 people have been displaced due to floods in Ethiopia since late July, 2020. Flooding has affected Afar, Gambella, Oromia, and SNNP regions since 20 July. In Afar region, the overflow of Awash River and flash floods in the first week of August have displaced almost 20,000 people. Meanwhile, 1,740 people have been displaced in Kefa zone of SNNP region after flooding and landslides. The overflowing Rib River has caused flooding in South Gonder zone of Amhara region since late July, submerging roads and affecting around 1,000 people.


Wildfires – Siberia

The terror of raging wildfires in northern Russia saw desperate Arctic villagers evacuating by boat to escape 35ft flames and choking smoke. Panicking residents in remote Svatay fled on the Alazeya River when they feared their settlement would be destroyed.

The village is 140 miles above the Arctic Circle and has been encircled by fires for weeks, culminating in the exodus when locals felt their lives in danger. The infernos fuelled by high winds have wiped out ancient trees, and roasted alive wildlife including sables and rare birds.

Chikungunya – Cambodia

The Minister of Health in Cambodia, Professor Mam Bunheng (computer translated) is calling on the public and local authorities to do what’s needed to eradicate the “tiger mosquito” in light of the chikungunya fever outbreak which is steadily increasing in the country. According to the Ministry of Health, as of August 6, the Ministry has identified a total of 2,047 suspected cases of chikungunya in 15 provinces.
