Thailand – One person has died after heavy rainfall and flooding which has affected wide areas of northern Thailand since 20 August. Thai Meteorological Department reports that Phrae, capital of Phrae Province, recorded almost 240mm of rain in 24 hours to 22 August 2020. The Yom river overflowed flooding areas of Muang and Sung Men districts in the province, while the Nan river broke its banks in Nan Province, where 1 person died. Thousands of homes have been damaged, along with wide areas of crops. Almost 40,000 people have been affected and 1,065 people displaced. Heavy rainfall also triggered a landslide in Muang Mae Hong Son district of Mae Hong Son province.


Elephant-shrew Rediscovered After 50 Years

Conservation group World wide Wildlife Conservation (GWC) announced the rediscovery of the “romantically monogamous” Somali sengi on Tuesday. The elephant-shrew was on the organization’s 25 Most Preferred Lost Species record.

GWC introduced the 1st scientific documentation of a single Somali sengi in a variety of photographs showing the mouse-like animal standing on some rocks. The insect-eater has a trunk-like nose and is more closely linked to elephants than ordinary shrews.

The study group caught an elusive Somali sengi in a lure baited with peanut butter, oatmeal and yeast.

Shingella – China

Chinese health officials are reporting a shigellosis outbreak in Shou County, Anhui province. Some 493 cases have been reported since Aug. 20. At least 293 people were hospitalized. Officials suspect to outbreak is linked to flooding from the Yangtze River which polluted drinking water.
