India – Cyclone Nivar made landfall to the north of Puducherry on 26 November 2020, causing severe wind damage and some flooding in low-lying areas of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. Nivar also brought heavy rainfall to parts of Andhra Pradesh, where flooding has affected Chittoor, Nellore and Kadapa districts. Six flood-related fatalities were reported in Chittoor district and 2 in Kadapa. Thousands of people have been displaced and were staying in relief camps, including 17,163 people in Nellore, 15,289 in Kadapa and 4,012 in Chittoor. Hundreds of roads and over 100,000 hectares of crops have been damaged across the 3 districts.

Brazil – At least 150 people were rescued from flash floods in the city of São Carlos in the interior of São Paulo State, Brazil on 26 November 2020. Flooding struck after a short period of torrential rainfall. According to the São Carlos government, 138mm of rain fell between in just over 1 hour, which is more than the November monthly average. The force of the floods was so strong that it dragged 37 vehicles along city streets. Around 40 homes were also damaged and three houses completely destroyed. However there were no reports of fatalities as of 28 November. The state government said that around 130 businesses had suffered severe damaged. A state of emergency has been declared for the city.

Indonesia – Over 25,000 people have been affected by floods in Serdang Bedagai Regency in North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. As of 28 November, 5,336 homes had been damaged and 26,680 people affected, according to BNPB. Over 100 families have evacuated and moved to temporary accommodation. Severe flooding has affected the city of Tebing Tinggi in particular over the last few days. As of 30 November, the city government reported 6,663 houses damaged. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has also affected areas of Indonesia and Malaysia on the island of Borneo, in particular in South Kalimantan Province, where flooding on 27 November affected 390 people and damaged 130 homes in Tapin Regency. The following day, floods in Tabalong regency damaged 497 homes, affecting 1,873 people. Further north on the island of Borneo, 364 people were displaced from their homes after flooding in Bintulu in the state of Sarawak in Malaysia on 28 November. Bintulu recorded 256.6mm of rain in 24 hours to 28 November 2020.


Wildfires – Australia

A large wildfire continues to burn on the heritage listed Fraser Island. Some visitors have had to be evacuated and numerous trails have been closed. The fire has now ripped through 72,000ha of land, equivalent to 40 per cent of the 181,851 hectare world heritage-listed island. The fire broke out on October 14 when an illegal campfire got out of control.

Polio – Afghanistan – Global

Afghanistan reported two additional wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases in Hilmand province, bringing the total to 56 in 2020 to date. The number of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) across countries in Africa and Asia and the Middle East rose by some 69 cases last week.
