Niger – Over 50 people have now died in floods in Niger after heavy rainfall recently caused severe damage and 5 fatalities in the capital, Niamey.

Texas, USA – One person died and another was seriously injured after torrential rain and flooding caused the wall of a house to collapse in El Paso, Texas, on 12 August 2021. The victims were attempting to evacuate the house before the wall collapsed. Further heavy rainfall since then has left wide areas of the city of El Paso were under torrents of water. Sandbags are being distributed to protect property.

Russia – Severe weather has once again affected areas of Russia‘s Black Sea coast, in particular in Krasnodar Region, where strong winds, hail and heavy rain have caused power outages and flooding. As of 14 August, over 100,000 people were without power in the Krasnodar Region due to wind damage. Heavy rain has triggered flash floods in several areas, in particular in the resort city of Anapa where more than 450 people were evacuated including tourists from hotels.

Wildfires – Bolivia

Devastating wildfires in Bolivia consumed 749,000 hectares from January to July, the Friends of Nature Foundation (FAN) NGO said on Thursday night.

As in neighboring Brazil, the fires have been aggravated by widespread deforestation aimed at expanding farming or pastureland. The eastern Santa Cruz and northeastern Beni departments account for 94 percent of burnt areas.

Ebola – Ivory Coast

The Cote d’Ivoire, or Ivory Coast Ministry of Health confirmed Saturday the country’s first case of Ebola since 1994. This came after the Institut Pasteur in Cote d’Ivoire confirmed the Ebola Virus Disease in samples collected from a patient, who was hospitalized in the commercial capital of Abidjan, after arriving from Guinea.
