Nigeria – More flooding has affected Nigeria, this time in the west of the country. Over the last few days floods in Niger state have caused damage to hundreds of homes and farms, mostly across the Local Government Areas (LGA) of Mashegu and Kontagora. At least 200 homes and wide areas of farmland were destroyed in the the floods. Furthermore, at least 4 fatalities were reported with many more people feared missing.
USA – Dozens of people were rescued or evacuated after heavy rain brought by the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred triggered severe flash flooding in parts of New York State. Flooding was also reported in parts of Massachusetts, where 2 people were rescued. Flooding damaged an estimated 120 homes in Steuben County where stretches of road were destroyed.
Rain Falls on Greenland for First Time
Rain has fallen on the summit of Greenland’s ice sheet for the first time in recorded history, heightening concerns about the already precarious condition of its ice.
An unprecedented 7 billion tons (6.3 billion metric tons) of water pelted the ice sheet last Saturday (Aug. 14), falling as rain and not snow for several hours. This was the third time temperatures at the summit had risen above freezing in less than a decade.
