Mexico – Further flooding in central Mexico has caused the tragic deaths of at least 17 patients of a hospital in Hidalgo State. Heavy rainfall on 07 September 2021 caused the Tula and Rosas rivers to break their banks in the municipality of Tula de Allende (known as Tula) in Hidalgo State, situated about 70 km / 45 miles north of Mexico City. Flood waters swept through streets and into buildings, including the hospital of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). Flooding also knocked out power in the area including the hospital which was caring for several COVID-19 patients.

Uganda – Around 270 people have been displaced from their homes after further flooding in Kasese District in Western Uganda. According to Uganda Red Cross, flooding has affected communities in Karusandara and Kanyengeya in Kasese District over the last few days. Heavy rain from 03 September 2021 caused the Nyamwamba to break its banks.

Ecuador – Three people have died and 2 are still missing after flash floods in Tungurahua Province in central Ecuador on 05 September 2021. Flooding struck in areas around Baños de Agua Santa (known as Baños) after heavy rain caused the La Estancia river to break its banks. Landslides were also reported in the area, and a bridge was severely damaged leaving around 50 people isolated in the La Estancia sector. Five people were swept away in the floods.

Nepal – Hundreds of homes were damaged and residents rescued after flash floods in areas of Kathmandu, capital of Nepal, on 06 September 2021. Meanwhile officials in the country report that over 60 people have lost their lives in flood and landslides over the last 4 weeks. Flooding began in Kathmandu after heavy rainfall late 05 to early 06 September. Some areas saw more than 120mm of rain in around 8 hours. The September average for Kathmandu is around 200 mm. Over 380 houses were damaged and more than 200 people rescued by teams from police and military across the city. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Anthrax – Spain

Veterinary Health authorities have reported an outbreak of anthrax in a bovine farm in Ciudad Real. According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), 25 animals died from the disease.

Mad Cow Disease – Brazil

The Brazilian Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) Surveillance System detected two cases of atypical BSE, type H in two beef cows in meat plants in two different states–Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso.

Monkeypox – Nigeria

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), in August 2021, a total of nine suspected monkeypox cases, six confirmed cases and 0 deaths were reported from six states. This is up from the four confirmed cases reported in July.
