Brazil – At least 14 people were killed, including seven children, after days of heavy rains triggered flooding and landslides in the southeastern Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. Rain showers began Thursday, leading to deadly landslides in the region. The volume of rain registered in the last 48 hours was the highest on record in Angra dos Reis, according to the city’s municipal government.

Australia – Huge swells have lashed Sydney, swallowing beaches under tide waters and ripping boats from their moorings inside the harbour. Bondi and Clovelly beaches were flooded over and waves battered the walls of the beachside Coogee Surf Club on Saturday morning. Inside the harbour near the Manly ferry wharf, boats were ripped from their moorings, with some vessels washed up on the nearby beach.

Leptospirosis – French Guiana.

With the heavy rains of recent months, Leptospirosis returned to French Guiana. The disease has already caused one death and several patients are currently in intensive care units. On average, about 40 cases are diagnosed each year in the territory.

Bubonic Plague – DR Congo

According to local sources, 16 suspect bubonic plague cases, including 2 deaths (CFR = 12.5%) were reported from March 27 to 31 in Rethy Health Zone (RHZ), Ituri Province in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Dengue, Chikungunya – Brazil

Through March 29, the state of Minas Gerais recorded 16,940 probable cases of dengue. Of this total, 7,220 cases were confirmed for the disease. Five deaths were confirmed by the disease in Minas Gerais (Espinosa, Bom Sucesso, Medeiros, Rio Paranaíba and Betim). Regarding Chikungunya fever, 1,314 probable cases of the disease were registered.
