Caribbean – Hurricane Fiona dumped more than 25 inches / 635 mm of rain as it made its way across Puerto Rico. At least 2 people lost their lives in the storm in Puerto Rico. Fiona later made landfall in the Dominican Republic, triggering further flooding. Previous heavy rain associated with storm Fiona caused flooding in Guadeloupe where one person died. In Puerto Rico strong winds and heavy rains caused widespread damage to homes, roads, bridges as well as power and water infrastructure, leaving thousands without power or running water. At one stage only 30% of the island had running water. Authorities reported 2 storm-related fatalities. n a 24 hour period to 19 September a weather station in Adjuntas measured 22 inches / 558.8 mm and another in Aibonito measured 17.74 inches / 450.6 mm.

Nigeria – Nigeria is battling its worst floods in a decade with more than 300 people killed in 2022 including at least 20 this week, as authorities said the situation is “beyond our control.” The floods in 27 of Nigeria’s 36 states and capital city have affected half a million people, including 100,000 displaced and more than 500 injured. The disaster has also destroyed thousands of hectares of farmland, worsening fears of a disruption of food supply in Africa’s most populous country.

Cholera – Phillippines

The Philippines Department of Health has reported a large increase in cholera cases through August this year. Based on the latest data, from January 1 to August 27, 3,318 cholera cases have been reported.

Plague – Mongolia

The Mongolia Ministry of Health in Ulaanbaatar has reported a case of human bubonic plague in a person who ate marmot meat caught in a trap.

Ebola – Uganda

The Uganda Ministry of Health declared an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak today after a case of the Sudan ebolavirus was confirmed in Mubende district in the central part of the country.
