Philippines – Eeforestation and the effects of climate change fuelled the flooding and landslides in Maguindanao following heavy rain from Tropical Storm Nalgae (known locally as Paeng). By far the most destructive of the flooding and landslides occurred in areas heavily deforested through timber exploitation.

Colombia – Flooding and landslides over the past week have impacted around 15,000 people across 8 departments and the Capital District of Bogotá. Landslides destroyed 50 homes and damaged more than 400.

Cameroon, Chad – The flood situation in northern Cameroon has worsened over the last 4 weeks and the number of people affected is now over 150,000 following the overflow of the Chari and Logone Rivers. About 18,276 houses and 27,400 hectares of crops and farmland have been destroyed and 5,886 livestock lost. More than 294 water points and 1,194 latrines have been damaged. The floods also disrupted basic social services, including schools, health facilities and markets. Flood damage to over 126 schools has interrupted the education of around 38,813 children. Meanwhile flooding from the same rivers has affected neighbouring areas of Chad, in particular the capital N’Djamena, where almost 100,000 people have moved from their homes to find safer locations. On 19 October as many as 49,569 people (10,340 households) had been forced from their homes and had taken refuge in public spaces.

Venezuela – At least 3 people have died after heavy rain and flooding in areas of Caracas and the northern state of La Guaira in Venezuela.

Across the Northern Territory, thousands of square kilometres of parched savanna and grazing land have been reduced to ashes as bushfires spread rapidly amid another heatwave and weeks of ongoing lightning strikes. Bushfires NT, the Northern Territory’s agency for rural fire management, had responded to more than 47 wildfires since the start of the fire season, director of operations Andrew Turner said in a statement on Tuesday.

Ebola – Uganda

Update: Two new confirmed cases (Both female, 43yrs, both from Kassanda who are linked to known cases), bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 128. Two additional confirmed deaths (both from Kassanda), bringing the total to 34.

Visceral Leishmaniasis – Kenya

The visceral leishmaniasis, or kala-azar outbreak in Kenya has been continuous since 2020. A total of 2037 visceral leishmaniasis (suspected and confirmed) cases have been reported. The outbreak is active in four counties.

Cholera – Cameroon

Authorities in Cameroon report an outbreak of cholera in the Far North Region, As of 24 October, the Ministry of Public Health reported 193 suspected cholera cases and 11 related deaths in the region. The situation is of concern in the Minawao refugee camp, where 86 cases and 3 deaths have been reported.
