Disease

The number of cases of swine flu continues to grow in the USA with 289 cases since 2011. The present variant of the disease has the same gene as the H1N1 swine flu virus that was responsible for the 2009 pandemic.

Wildfires

Large wildfires continue to burn in Utah and northern California, USA.

Unprecedented wildfires burn across large parts of Bosnia with 260 fires registered on Friday alone. Temperatures of 40 degrees C and landmines left over from the conflict hamper firefighters.

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to head for Florida, USA after soaking Haiti and Cuba.

The monsoon rains, late this year, have finally arrived with full force in India, wreaking havoc in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Fata and Azad Kashmir and leaving at least 32 people dead over the last few days.

Flooding in northern Nigeria over the past few days has left at least 11 people dead.

Disease

Researchers have identified a mysterious new disease that has left scores of people in Asia and some in the United States with AIDS-like symptoms even though they are not infected with HIV.

The patients’ immune systems become damaged, leaving them unable to fend off germs as healthy people do.

What triggers this isn’t known, but the disease does not seem to be contagious.

This is another kind of acquired immune deficiency that is not inherited and researchers are calling this new disease an “adult-onset” immunodeficiency syndrome because it develops later in life and they don’t know why or how.
