Wildfires – Algeria

Wildfires in Northeast Algeria have killed at least 38 people according to reports by local journalists and the fire service. Most of the fatalities have occurred in the El Tarf province near Algeria’s border with Tunisia within about 20 miles of the Mediterranean Sea. Officials said that 39 fires were spreading through parts of northern Algeria, and they warned that hot, dry winds could worsen the situation. Approximately 16 fires are near the city of El Tarf. About 90 people are thought to have died in fires last year when more than 250,000 acres of forests burned.

Wildfires – Spain

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes as more wildfires sweep across parts of Spain. Climate change and lightning strikes have seen fires break out across the land in recent days, causing damage to countryside and populated areas, as firefighters try to control the situation. In one hair-raising incident, a train service was caught up in a sweeping wildfire near Valencia, which left three passengers seriously injured.

In the Northwest Pacific Ocean: Tropical Storm 25w (Malou), located approximately 349 nm south-southwest of Iwo To, is tracking northeastward at 06 knots.

Tropical depression 26w (Twenty-six), located approximately 259 nm east-northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, has tracked west-northwestward at 08 knots.

Algeria and Tunisia – One person died after a vehicle was swept away by flood water in Baba Hassen commune in Algiers Province. A second victim is still missing. Some areas of Algiers city recorded more than 140 mm in 24 hours to 24 October. Floods also affected several regions of neighbouring Tunisia overnight from 23 to 24 October 2021. Two people died in Thala, Kasserine Governorate, after a car was washed away. A third victim died in similar circumstances in Borj Chakir, a locality near the city of Tunis. Civil Protection teams rescued several people from flood waters in Manouba and Béja governorates. Severe flooding was also reported in Bizerte Governorate.

Italy – Italy’s fire service Vigili del Fuoco reported that, as a result of the severe weather fire fighters carried out more than 400 interventions in Sicily Region, mostly in areas around Catania and Syracuse, and 180 interventions in Calabria, in particular in areas around Vibo Valentia. Two elderly people were missing after being swept away by floods in Scordia comune in the Metropolitan City of Catania in Sicily region. The body of one victim has since been found while search operations including helicopters are continuing. Four people were rescued from floods in Trapani.

Blazes continue to rage across northern Algeria as the country observes a national day of mourning after dozens of people were killed in the latest wildfires to sweep the Mediterranean nation.

The North African country has been in the grip of devastating fires since Monday that have killed at least 69 people – 41 civilians and 28 soldiers – as of Thursday.

The Mediterranean nation is broiling under one of its worst heat waves in decades and firefighters continue to battle blazes across the country. Sixty-three organized evacuations have taken place in the past few days.

At least 25 soldiers were killed saving residents from wildfires ravaging mountain forests and villages east of the capital, he said. The civilian death toll from the blazes rose to at least 17.

Wildfire Smoke Reaches North Pole

Smoke from wildfires raging in Russia has reached the North Pole for the first time in recorded history.

Data captured by satellites flying over the region revealed Friday show just how much smoke is being produced from the hundreds of forest fires in the Sakha Republic in Siberia and just how far that smoke is spreading. Smoke blankets the sky for about 2,000 miles from east to west and 2,500 miles north to south, the report noted. Smoke from those fires has even been recorded as having traveled more than 1,864 miles to reach the North Pole — an unprecedented distance.

Algeria – Severe flash flooding has affected parts of northern Algeria since 02 May 2021. As of 04 May, fatalities were reported in Batna, Médéa and Provinces. evere flooding in Médéa Province following heavy rainfall on 03 May 2021. Buildings, roads and infrastructure were damaged. Four people died after being swept away by flood water in the municipality of Beni-Slimane where a medical building and dozens of vehicles were damaged. In M’sila Province, 1 person died in flood waters in Daïra de Magra municipality. Two people died after being swept away by flood waters in Amdoukal municipality.

Indonesia – Hundreds of homes were damaged after flash floods in West Lombok Regency in the province of West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Flooding struck after heavy rainfall began on 01 May 2021. Indonesia’s meteorological agency BMKG reported 138.5 mm of rain in West Lombok in 24 hours to 02 May 2021. Heavy rain triggered an overflow of a local rive, flooding areas of Kediri and Gerung Districts. Flood water was up to 50cm deep. As many as 294 homes were damaged, at least 6 of them severely, forcing residents to evacuate.

Spain – Heavy rain from 05 March caused flash flooding in Andalusia and Murcia regions of southern Spain. In a 24 hour period to 05 March, 127.2mm of rain fell in Estepona in Málaga Province and 77.8mm in Tarifa in the province of Cádiz, both in Andalusia. San Roque in Cádiz recorded 92.6mm the following day. Heavy rain and flooding also affected parts of neighbouring Murcia Region.

Algeria – At least 10 people died or are missing after flash floods in Chlef Province of Algeria on 06 March 2021. Chlef Province experienced heavy rainfall on 06 March, causing the Wadi Meknasa to flood in an areas of the Oud Sly Commune, west of the city of Chlef. Three vehicles were swept away in the flooding and nearby houses damaged.

Wildfires – Algeria

A wildfire has killed two people west of the Algerian capital, the emergency services said Saturday, one of a spate of seasonal blazes to hit the north African country. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes after the fire swept through forest near the coastal city of Tipaza trapping and killing two men in a chicken coop. Over the past 24 hours, fires have been reported in northern Algeria in 10 of the country’s 58 provinces.

Algeria – At least one person died and hundreds of homes damaged after flash flooding in northern Algeria. The flooding came after stormy weather from 07 to 08 September brought heavy rainfall. Baraki in Algiers Province recorded 63.0 mm of rain in 24 hours to 08 September. Flooding also affected the capital, Algiers, and surrounding areas. Roads were inundated, causing severe traffic disruption in at least 5 municipalities.
