Wildfires – Bolivia

Heavy rain that has drenched eastern Bolivia’s Chiquitania tropical savanna has put out fires that have ravaged millions of hectares in recent months, authorities said Sunday. Firefighters will wait 24 hours to be sure that all fires are completely out before they head out of the area.

Russia puts out all wildfires

Russia has extinguished all wildfires in the country, which hit a total area of 10.337 million hectares, the Russian Aerial Forest Protection Service said Monday.

Wildfires – Amazon

Wildfires are still raging in the Amazon rainforest.

Twelve million hectares have burnt so far, three times more than last year. This means an area nearly the size of Greece.

Brazil paid the hardest price, but the flames are ravaging also some other of the nine countries the Amazon spans to. In Bolivia, 5,000 people are fighting the blaze, but it is still out of control.

It has been dubbed as the worst fires in living memory. Since January, 5 million hectares of forest and savanna were lost in Bolivia, two million just in the past two months. The flames are threatening 1,200 species. As a result, Amazon’s indigenous communities say this is an ‘environmental genocide’.

Wildfires – Bolivia

Wildfires in Bolivia have torched two million hectares (4.9 million acres) of forest and grassland since August, including some environmentally protected areas, officials said Monday.

Environmentalists blame laws enacted under President Morales, who has encouraged burning of forest and pasture land to expand agricultural production. The government attributes the blazes to dry weather and winds.

Bolivia’s government recently authorized farmers to burn 20 hectares (almost 50 acres) instead of the usual five hectares (12 acres) — which is believed to have contributed to thousands of wildfires.

Wildfires – Australia

Firefighters are working to contain a bushfire north of Brisbane but have warned they may not be able to protect every property in the semi-rural area and conditions could get worse.

Meanwhile Pilots flying over Bribie Island’s northwestern beaches were met by a heartbreaking scene this afternoon. Numbers of dead kangaroos were spotted from the air. They had been killed fleeing the bushfires. The bushfires at Bribie Island engulfed campsites on Wednesday and Thursday, with water bombers deployed from helicopters top douse the remaining flames today.

Wildfires – Bolivia

Bolivian authorities warned this week that 70% of the department of Santa Cruz — where more than a quarter of the country’s population lives — is under “extreme risk” from forest fires.

According to the government, nearly 500,000 hectares of forest have now been turned into ashes.

According to Brazil’s space research centre (INPE), 72,843 fires have hit the country’s side of the Amazon — an 83% increase on last year and the highest number registered since records began in 2013. The smokes from the wildfires on Wednesday caused an hour-long blackout in Sao Paulo, located 2,700 kms away.

Greenpeace has blamed the record number of wildfires in the Brazilian Amazon on deforestation. It also warned that it could have severe meteorological consequences for the region but also for the globe.

Bolivia – At least 10 thousand hectares of banana plantations were flooded in the Cochabamba tropic, causing millions in losses to the community and producers. More than 7 500 families were affected by the floods.

Argentina – Intense rainfall in Northeast Argentina has caused devastating floods, amplifying the economic burdens of the country’s record inflation. About 3,500 people have evacuated the region, and millions of hectares of crops have been sent underwater. The flooded region, which extends into Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil, has received about five times more rain than expected since the beginning of the year. Some areas received a whole year’s worth of rainfall in the first 15 days of the calendar year. 2.4 million hectares of soybeans are flooded. The greatest losses come from the Pampa Húmeda region, one of the main food producers in the world. Other crops like corn and cotton, along with livestock have been wiped out across the Northeast. Just last year, Argentina was plagued with severe drought, the worst that had hit the country in half a century. This drought crushed the country’s agricultural sector and strained the country’s economy. It’s blamed in part for the current run on Argentine currency.
