Colombia – Two people died in a landslide in Antioquia Department, Colombia on 12 December. The landslide occurred along the road between Bogota and Medellin, near the village of El Silencio in San Luis Municipality. Six homes were destroyed in the landslide, leaving 2 dead and 6 injured. DAGRAN evacuated around 30 people.

Indonesia – On Java Island, a combination of unusually high tides and rough seas caused coastal flooding in Indramayu in West Java on 06 December 2020. According to AHA Centre, 2,208 houses were damaged and 10,129 people affected. Meanwhile flooding in Bangkalan Regency in East Java Province left one person dead and 4,131 people affected. Parts of Sumatra were also affected by flooding in recent days, in particular areas of Aceh Province in the northwest tip of the island. Severe flooding affected North Aceh regency on 04 December after the Krueng Jambo Aye river broke its banks, according to AHA Centre. As many as 60,658 people were affected, 18,203 homes damaged and 19,476 people displaced. A period of heavy rain caused flooding in Aceh Tamiang Regency on 12 December, damaging 1,812 homes, displacing 1,303 people and affecting 7,288. Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in Dompu Regency of West Nusa Tenggara Province on 12 December, damaging 46 homes and affecting 230 people.

Colombia – More people have died in landslides caused by heavy rain in the department of Antioquia, Colombia. A landslide struck in the village of Cachirime in Puerto Valdivia, Valdivia municipality on 23 November 2020. Two commercial buildings were buried in the landslide. After search and rescue operations were completed, it was confirmed that 7 people had died and 12 were injured.

Somalia – At least 8 people have died as a result of Tropical Storm Gati, which made landfall in Somalia on 22 November. Tropical Cyclone Gati made landfall in Somalia on 22 November 2020, primarily impacting parts of Bari region in Puntland State and then Sanaag region in Somaliland. Authorities said rainfall totals from the storm were greater than amounts normally seen for the whole year. In a 24 hour period, Bosaso recorded 128mm of rain and Balidhidin (also Balli Dhiddin) 103mm.

Italy – Over 200 people were rescued from floods in southern Italy over the weekend 20 to 22 November after more than 450mm of rain in 48 hours. orrential rain the Italy’s Calabria Region caused severe flooding in the provinces of Crotone and Cosenza, causing widespread damage. The regional government has requested a state of emergency.

South Africa – Heavy rain caused flash flooding in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Gauteng, South Africa, from 20 November 2020. Four flood- and rain-related fatalities were reported. Damage was reported to roads and infrastructure. Local media said one person died after being swept away while trying to cross a river with strong currents in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal. Severe flooding was reported in Tshwane, Gauteng, with roads and bridges damaged and vehicles left stranded in flood water. Three young people died in a storm water trench in Hammanskraal on 21 November.

Indonesia – Heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in parts of Java and Sumatra Islands, western Indonesia from 19 November 2020. At least 3 fatalities were reported. Heavy rain caused a landslide in Pagelaran District, Cianjur Regency, West Java on 19 November. On person died and vehicles and roads were damaged.

Colombia – Over 260,000 people have been affected by heavy rain, flooding or landslides in Colombia since mid-September and the start of the second rainy season. Rainfall intensified across northern departments of the country from 13 November, influenced by the passage of Hurricane Iota and by the development of La Niña conditions. The Islands of San Andrés and Providencia were directly affected by Hurricane Iota on 16 November. Around 80% of homes on the island of Providencia have been damaged or destroyed. In the period 13 to 19 November, Colombia’s Civil Defence reported flooding or landslides in 14 departments.

Colombia – A landslide occurred in Dabeiba Municipality on 13 November, destroying buildings and roads in the area. According to the department’s disaster agency Dapard, as of 16 November, at least 4 people were dead and 7 were still missing. Eight survivors have been found. A total of 497 people have been affected from 180 families. Twenty people were reported injured. The landslide destroyed 67 homes and damaged 104 other, along with 3 schools and 5.5 km of roads. Dapard also reported flooding in the department after heavy rainfall caused the Penderisco River to break its banks in Urrao. At least 2 bridges were damaged or destroyed, limiting access to some remote areas.

Somalia – Flooding has worsened in Somalia in the last few days, with over 200,000 people now affected. In Baidoa town, South West State, more than 66,000 people including IDPs have been affected, of whom 6,000 have been displaced. Thousands of hectares of farmland have been inundated particularly along the river basins.

Guatemala – A landslide struck in Agua Caliente village in the Camotán municipality in the early hours of 14 November 2020 after heavy rain. At least 10 people were buried when the landslide caused the wall of a building to collapse. Average later reported 7 people had died and 3 survived.

Brazil – Around 300 people have been displaced after torrential rainfall in the city of Sanharo in Pernambuco, a state in northeast Brazil. Around 300 people evacuated their homes, mostly in the Salgado neighbourhood of the city, and were temporarily housed in local schools and gyms.

Colombia – Flooding has affected the departments of Magdalena and Norte Santander in Colombia over the last few days. The country’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reported that flooding has affected 9,200 families across 7 municipalities in Magdalena Department. No fatalities or injuries have been reported. Flooding has affected the department since late October. Thousands of homes have been damaged but as of 03 November. Relief items have been distributed to affected families.

Uganda – Red Cross in Uganda reports that 2 people have died after flash flooding in Kasese District. Around 1,200 families were displaced in Kasese due to the recent heavy rains and landslides. The affected families have camped at schools and churches for shelter.

Nicaragua and Honduras – Hurricane “Eta” made landfall on 03 November in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region (RACCN) of Nicaragua as a category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds of 220 km/h. ETA was later downgraded to a category 2 hurricane, and continued to move over north-eastern Nicaragua, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of neighbouring Honduras. Nicaragua’s disaster agency, SINAPRED, said that around 30,000 people had been pre-emptively evacuated from threatened areas in RACCN. In Honduras, the departments of Colon, Atlantida, Cotes, Yoro, and Gracias a Dios were under red alert as of 03 November.

Colombia – Wide areas of Colombia have seen heavy rainfall since the start of July. According to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), the rain has caused over 80 incidents of flooding or landslides in 19 departments of the country, with over 5,000 families affected. Hundreds of homes were damaged by flooding in Sibundoy and Mocoa municipalities of Putumayo Department on 04 July, 2020. Media report over 2,000 families were affected. Meanwhile in Antioquia, the departmental government reports that 4,575 people have been affected by heavy rains and winds and 39 homes have been destroyed. Three people died when a river broke its banks, sweeping away a house in Piedecuesta, Santander Department on 08 July. Meanwhile heavy rain on 11 July triggered a landslide in Santa Marta, Magdalena, causing a house to collapse and 2 fatalities.

Indonesia – Heavy rain continues to fall in parts of Indonesia, causing flooding and landslides across several provinces which have left at least 17 dead and over 40 missing since 11 July. The worst of the flooding is in North Luwu Regency in South Sulawesi Province, where at least 16 people have died.

South Korea – Two people died after torrential rain in South Korea triggered flash flooding on 13 July, 2020. Several locations recorded more than 200mm of rain in 24 hours. Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reported 277 mm of rain in Sancheong in South Gyeongsang Province in 24 hours to 13 July, while Buan, North Jeolla Province recorded 228 mm and Geoje near Busan South Gyeongsa Province 210 mm.

Pakistan – Flash floods triggered by a glacial lake outburst flood destroyed homes and damaged buildings in the Lower Chitral district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The flooding occurred in the Golen valley of Lower Chitral district on 13 July, 2020. Power and water infrastructure was damaged and roads washed away.
