Firefighters with air support were suppressing a lightning-sparked wildfire Sunday in southeastern Colorado that had burned more than 11,818 acres over the past four days.

Las Animas County and state authorities decided to suppress this Cherry Canyon fire, burning in canyon country near the Purgatoire River about 10 miles west of Kim, even though people and buildings weren’t threatened.

A separate fire of unknown origin was burning nearby about 120 acres northeast of the Cherry Canyon fire. Neither fire was controlled as of Sunday night.

The wildfires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone have flared up again. The fires have burned through over 8,600 acres in the past week, according to the Exclusion Zone Management Agency, which manages the site. About 400 firefighters, 100 fire engines and several helicopters were deployed to the area by Saturday.

Contaminated smoke is expected to reach Kiev this week, but the radiation level in the air, once smoke has dispersed far from the fires, is considered safe, and is expected to be about a hundredth of the level deemed an emergency.

Crews are responding to a wildfire in southeastern Colorado that’s burning on an estimated 1,200 acres as of 7:30 p.m. Saturday. According to a tweet from the Otero County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), the “massive” Bent’s Fort fire is on Highway 194 east of La Junta. Multiple fire agencies and law enforcement are on the scene. Ground and air crews are fighting the fire, which has crossed into Bent County.

A bush fire east of Narrabri is expected to burn for a number of weeks due to steep terrain, so North West residents may see smoke. The Kaputar fire continues to spread in all directions under variable winds, and approximately 7800 hectares are already burnt in the Kaputar National Park. No properties are currently under threat.

The Middle Mamm fire continues to burn, it is about 10 miles east of Rifle. It has burned about 1,235 acres and containment is around thirty-four percent.

The Cow Creek fire is about nine miles east of ridgeway. The Forest Service says it has now grown to 785 acres.

The Decker Fire Update – The wildfire has now destroyed at least one home and charred more than 5,800 acres in central Colorado. More than 450 firefighters and several aircraft have been assigned to the fire, which is burning in rough terrain south of Salida. The fire, which is 5% contained, has forced the evacuation of about 130 homes.

The Decker Fire south of Salida forced evacuations Wednesday morning as it continues to grow. The fire was sparked by lightning Sept. 8. The fire has grown to 2,207 acres and is only 5% contained, according to the incident information system.

A number of wildfires are burning near Denver, Colorado encompassing about 1 250 acres. Some evacuations have been ordered for a fire northwest of Fort Collins. Firefighters are containing the blazes.

Emergency warnings for bushfires burning near Darwin have been downgraded as fire crews battle to prevent the further spread of fire. Bushfires NT said between 50 and 60 properties were under threat due to the blaze burning at Fog Bay Road in Milne, and the fire was spotting ahead of the front.

Meanwhile firefighters continued to battle about 50 bushfires across Queensland on Sunday.

Crews from the states of Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and from New Zealand were helping fight blazes that have destroyed homes, businesses and an estimated 55,000 hectares (135, 908 acres) of land. The 10-day emergency has seen some 1,200 bushfires burning across the state, with more than 600 community warnings issued in the past two weeks. Officials have warned some fires could burn for months because the ground is bone-dry and there is no significant rain in sight.

The state Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has recorded 494 cases involving wildfires from Aug 1 till today. In a statement released by Bomba today, 1391.73 acres of land have been affected by the forest, bush and peat soil fires. Kuching recorded the highest bushfire cases as of today with eight cases, followed by Miri with four cases.

At least two evacuation orders were in place for residents in Jefferson County as a wildfire continued to burn in the area well into the night Thursday. In total, 328 homes were affected, but officials said that no structures had been lost.

India – Tropical Cyclone VAYU formed over the eastern Arabian Sea (Indian Ocean) on 10 June and started moving north…It could reach southwestern Gujarat State on 13 June, with maximum sustained winds up to 150-160 km/h. Heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast over western coastal states over the next 24 hours. A strong wind and heavy rainfall warning is in effect for Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra States and a thunderstorm warning for Maharashtra States. Gujarat has already evacuated about 1.2 lakhs people from low lying areas to safer places and would complete the evacuation of 3 lakh people by 4 PM today. Similarly Diu has evacuated 8000 people and would complete the evacuation of over 10000 people by 4 PM.

Yemen – Torrential rain and flash flooding in recent weeks, culminating in widespread flooding in the second week of June, have affected thousands of families across Yemen. It is estimated that rains and floods have affected close to 70,000 people, including internally displaced people, in over 10 governorates. Hajjah Governorate is the most affected Governorate.

Colorado, USA – Rivers are raging at or near flood levels across Colorado, with plenty of snow yet to melt on many mountain ranges. With more runoff on the way and the rainy season approaching, communities are bracing for impact.

UK – Yellow weather warnings are in place throughout the UK until Thursday as torrential rain continues across parts of England, Scotland and Wales, and an Amber warning in the north east in place for tomorrow.

Greece – Heavy rainstorms and hail battered many parts of mainland Greece, including Attica. A sudden hailstorm that hit the rural region around Arta in western Greece in the afternoon seriously damaged kiwi and citrus crops, municipal authorities said. Though the storm lasted only half an hour, some crops were completely destroyed and next year’s produce may also be affected by the damage. Cities in central Greece were hit by hail and storms too, with roads and homes flooded. There was flooding in parts of Attica too, including Aghia Marina and Koropi.

Warm temperatures and dry conditions allowed a wildfire burning along the Colorado-Wyoming border to continue to spread, officials said Saturday. The Ryan Fire has burned at least 2,986 acres in Jackson County, Colorado and Carbon County, Wyoming. It is burning about 27 miles northwest of Walden. Containment remains at 0 percent.

An emergency warning has been issued for a bushfire raging in remote WA, with residents told it is now too late to leave. Those living in the suburb of Lakeside in Kununurra, at the eastern extremity of the Kimberley, close to the Northern Territory border, have been told to shelter in their homes.

California is battling its largest wildfire ever recorded, along with 15 other major ones across the state.

The Mendocino Complex Fire is actually two separate fires, both of which began burning in late July: the Ranch Fire and the River Fire. They haven’t merged yet, but they are close enough to each other that officials from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection are counting them as one huge wildfire.

As of the morning of Aug. 7, the Mendocino Complex Fire has burned 283,800 acres (115,000 hectares) of land in northern California around Clear Lake and is only 30 percent contained. Fueled by high temperatures, low humidity and wind, the fire has destroyed nearly 170 homes and other structures.

Colorado, USA – Heavy rain falling over the 416 Fire burn scare in southwestern Colorado caused flooding and mudslides. The 416 Fire started over a month ago near Durango and is no longer considered a threat. The blaze charred more than 54,000 acres of wilderness and forced the evacuation of over 2,000 homes. Floods and mudslides that emergency workers feared since rains started to hit the 416 Fire burn scar arrived Tuesday afternoon, with significant debris flows across U.S. Highway 550, railroad tracks and East Animas Road (County Road 250), north of Durango.

In Northern California, the County Fire has burned about 134 square miles and is 27 percent contained in Napa and Yolo Counties. The blaze threatens 1,500 structures, but none has been destroyed or damaged. Roughly 2,500 people have been forced from their homes since the blaze started Saturday. This week in the Bay Area, about 75 miles south of the fires, falling ash was reported, and the San Francisco sky turned orange from the smoke.

Huge wildfires roared across the bone-dry western USA on Thursday, including Colorado’s Spring Creek Fire, the state’s third-largest on record. That fire has destroyed 100 homes and forced the evacuations of 2,000 other homes. The blaze is near Fort Garland, roughly 205 miles southwest of Denver. Nearly 1,000 firefighters worked to gain control of the fire in unpredictable winds, but it’s been only slightly contained since it ignited June 27. As of Thursday morning, the fire was 161 square miles, roughly seven times the size of Manhattan.

A 300-foot-high tsunami of wildfire swept over a subdivision overnight turning an untold number of homes into cinders and making unprecedented acreage gains in the middle of the night when wildfires are normally docile, authorities say, raising home toll to 251.

A massive wildfire in rural Northern California has exploded in size and forced evacuations in hot, dry weather that is sweeping through several western states where blazes are threatening thousands of homes.

The fast-moving fire that started Saturday about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco grew dramatically to about 94 square miles (243 square kilometers) by Monday night, largely burning out of control in rugged terrain with a few cattle and horse ranches and sending smoke and ash as far south as San Francisco.

State fire officials said 700 homes and other buildings were threatened but none had burned.

Authorities announced late Monday that a fire near Fort Garland, about 205 miles (330 kilometers) southwest of Denver, had destroyed 104 homes in a mountain housing development started by multimillionaire publisher Malcolm Forbes in the 1970s.
