Wildfires – Australia

Authorities have revealed the cause of a major bushfire that killed livestock and burned thousands of hectares near the South Australia-Victoria border. The large fire, which is not yet under control, was sparked by a car fire on New Year’s Eve about 1.30pm.

Fire crews are continuing to work on building containment lines to stop further spread of the grass and scrub fire near the local communities of Poolaijelo and Langkoop. An estimated 7330 hectares had been burnt by Sunday afternoon.

The Marshall fire has grown to over 6 000 acres with the number of burned houses expected to rise from 580. There are 1 778 houses within the perimeter of the fire. But not all of them were affected. However, the number of burned structures may rise to over 1 000. As entire subdivisions were wiped out, many household plumbing systems were also damaged or destroyed, which led to water gushing from the remains of structures. This depleted the water available at fire hydrants which became a challenge for firefighters. There have still been no reports of fatalities, which would be very remarkable considering the rapid spread of the blaze which allowed some residents only minutes to escape.

Fast-moving wildfires in Colorado swept through suburban areas near Denver on Thursday, prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in Boulder County and burning at least 580 homes, a shopping complex and a hotel, the authorities said.

The wildfires came unusually late in the year for Colorado, where severe drought conditions in recent months have set the stage for such blazes to easily spread.

The fires started on Thursday morning, officials said, and more than 1,600 acres had burned by the evening. The specific cause was unclear as of early Friday morning. Though a number of small blazes burned through Boulder County, some converged into two larger ones that state authorities named the Marshall and Middle Fork fires.

Forestry officials say more than 35 million acres burned over the summer, making it the second-worst fire season this century. Some of the uncontrolled blazes raged on top of permafrost in Russia’s largest and typically coldest region.
