An out of control bushfire caused evacuations on Sydney’s northern beaches on Saturday – and forced production crews to flee the Big Brother house.

The fire at North Head, near Manly, started as a hazard reduction burn before turning into an emergency when flames were blown past containment lines. The blaze sent smoke billowing across Sydney Harbour, leaving a haze hanging over the city.

The Range Fire and Fire Canyon Fire have already burned through thousands of acres in less than a day in Utah, with the cause of both fires still under investigation.

A fast-moving, rapidly growing wildfire erupted Saturday and expanded to more than 8,788 acres by Sunday morning in northwest Boulder County, Colo., prompting the evacuation of at least 3,000 people and sending hikers and campers fleeing to safety. The fire is just 5 percent contained, and low clouds grounded firefighting aircraft this morning.

A Colorado wildfire, fuelled by high winds, grew by more than 22,000 acres Wednesday to become the largest in state history.

The Cameron Peak Fire burning in the mountains west of Fort Collins had grown to 158,300 acres by Wednesday evening, making it the largest wildfire in state history. No injuries or deaths have been linked to the record-setting blaze, which is 56 percent contained.

The Cameron Peak Fire in the mountains west of Fort Collins has burned 131,231 acres and is 44% contained.

The Mullen Fire is burning on the Colorado-Wyoming border, about 38 miles west of Laramie. The fire has burned 173,747 acres. Thursday. Containment is at 18%.

The Middle Fork Fire about 10 miles north of Steamboat Springs has burned about 16,120 acres as of Friday morning.

The Grizzly Creek Fire near Glenwood Springs is holding steady at 32,431 acres, with 91% containment. The fire has not grown for several weeks.

The Williams Fork Fire in Grand County is at 14,005 acres, with 25% containment as of Thursday afternoon.

Frogs the surprise survivors of Black Summer bushfires – Australia

Research from the Australian Museum and UNSW Sydney, published this week in the Conservation Science and Practice journal, reveals many frog species in southeastern Australia survived the unprecedented 2019-2020 summer bushfires.

The amphibians are one of the most threatened groups of animals on earth and face many risks, including the growing threat of fires due to the climate crisis.

By working with a team of thousands of citizen scientists using FrogID, scientists at the Australian Museum and UNSW were able to reveal that many frog species have remarkably persevered through the fire events.

Two big Rocky Mountain wildfires flared up again Monday as dry, gusty winds blew embers past areas where firefighters had been making progress.

Firefighters at the Mullen Fire on the Wyoming-Colorado line and the Cameron Peak Fire in northern Colorado struggled as winds picked up in the afternoon as expected. No more structures were reported lost, however. Over 100 mainly recreational cabins and other structures have burned since the fires began.

The Oregon Department of Corrections on Tuesday evacuated an estimated 1,400 inmates from three state prisons in Marion County in response to wildfires threatening the region.

Gov. Kate Brown has declared a wildfire emergency in Oregon, where fire in the Santiam Canyon forced evacuations and wildfires elsewhere sent thick smoke across western Oregon, from Mount Hood to Lincoln County.

According to the governor, the Santiam fire, along with the Lionshead fire, have burned an estimated 200,000 acres so far.

Parts of Yosemite National Park are under advisory for a possible evacuation as the massive Creek Fire rages to the south.

The wildfire has burned nearly 135,000 acres in California so far with zero containment as of Monday evening, leading to numerous evacuations in rural portions of Fresno and Madera counties, including several outdoor recreation areas. In some cases, those trapped by the encroaching blaze have been airlifted out by National Guard helicopters.

Pine Gulch – Although the Pine Gulch fire on Thursday night became the largest wildfire in Colorado’s recorded history at 139,006 — 217 square miles — containment increased to 77% with “highly successful” firefighting efforts.

Grizzly Creek – The Grizzly Creek fire on Friday grew by about 40 acres to 32,448 acres, and fire containment is at 71%, fire officials said Friday night. The fire, burning near Glenwood Springs, is almost 51 square miles.

Cameron Peak – The Cameron Peak fire grew minimally overnight Thursday and has now burned 22,971 acres, or nearly 36 square miles, according to fire officials. The fire is 0% contained, and no structures have been damaged.

Williams Fork fire – The Williams Fork fire outside Fraser expanded slightly overnight Thursday and is now burning 12,048 acres — 19 square miles — with 5% containment, fire officials said Friday.

A rare summer thunderstorm brought lightning that sparked several small blazes in Northern California on Sunday and stoked a huge wildfire that has forced hundreds of people from their homes north of Los Angeles. More than 4,500 buildings remained threatened by the fire burning toward thick, dry brush in the Angeles National Forest.

Meanwhile the Lake Fire was just 12% contained Sunday and has burned nearly 28 square miles of brush and trees. Fire officials said 33 buildings had been destroyed, including at least a dozen homes.

Unsettling weather triggered an unusual warning by the weather service of a fire-induced tornado at an out-of-control forest fire that broke out north of Lake Tahoe on Saturday afternoon. The fire has burned at least 45 square miles and triggered evacuation orders for sparsely populated communities along State Route 395 by the California-Nevada border.

Officials working on the Grizzly Creek Fire, which has now burned more than 13,000 acres near Glenwood Springs since it was first reported Monday afternoon, while the Pine Gulch Fire has burned 73 000 acres and was 7% contained.

Firefighters across two states are battling wildfires that have destroyed more than 60,000 acres in the US West.

In the rugged hills near California’s Lake Hughes in Los Angeles County, the Lake Fire has grown to 10,000 acres and is 0% contained as of Wednesday evening.

And in Colorado, the Grizzly Creek Fire has destroyed more than 3,200 acres and is 0% contained, according to the US Forest Service. The Grizzly Creek Fire is less than 100 miles from the Pine Gulch Fire to the southwest, which has destroyed more than 50,000 acres in less than a week. The Bureau of Land Management says it is 7% contained.

A wildfire 18 miles north of Grand Junction has grown to 1,500 acres, and is just 5% contained. The Pine Gulch Fire was started by lightning Friday evening, according to a release from fire officials, and is burning in Mesa County about a mile south of the Garfield County line. It is burning in rugged terrain, in pinyon, juniper, oak brush and sagebrush, the release said, and hot and dry weather in the area is expected to continue. Gusty winds could make things worse, according to the release.

Crews are battling three active fires located southwest of Meeker. The Fawn Creek and Stewart fires began Monday afternoon and the Wolf Fire was reported Tuesday morning.

The three fires have burned more than 2,800 acres and were 0% contained as of Wednesday afternoon. They are located in the Piceance Creek area south of Colorado Highway 64.

Firefighters with air support were suppressing a lightning-sparked wildfire Sunday in southeastern Colorado that had burned more than 11,818 acres over the past four days.

Las Animas County and state authorities decided to suppress this Cherry Canyon fire, burning in canyon country near the Purgatoire River about 10 miles west of Kim, even though people and buildings weren’t threatened.

A separate fire of unknown origin was burning nearby about 120 acres northeast of the Cherry Canyon fire. Neither fire was controlled as of Sunday night.

The wildfires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone have flared up again. The fires have burned through over 8,600 acres in the past week, according to the Exclusion Zone Management Agency, which manages the site. About 400 firefighters, 100 fire engines and several helicopters were deployed to the area by Saturday.

Contaminated smoke is expected to reach Kiev this week, but the radiation level in the air, once smoke has dispersed far from the fires, is considered safe, and is expected to be about a hundredth of the level deemed an emergency.

Crews are responding to a wildfire in southeastern Colorado that’s burning on an estimated 1,200 acres as of 7:30 p.m. Saturday. According to a tweet from the Otero County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), the “massive” Bent’s Fort fire is on Highway 194 east of La Junta. Multiple fire agencies and law enforcement are on the scene. Ground and air crews are fighting the fire, which has crossed into Bent County.

A bush fire east of Narrabri is expected to burn for a number of weeks due to steep terrain, so North West residents may see smoke. The Kaputar fire continues to spread in all directions under variable winds, and approximately 7800 hectares are already burnt in the Kaputar National Park. No properties are currently under threat.

The Middle Mamm fire continues to burn, it is about 10 miles east of Rifle. It has burned about 1,235 acres and containment is around thirty-four percent.

The Cow Creek fire is about nine miles east of ridgeway. The Forest Service says it has now grown to 785 acres.

The Decker Fire Update – The wildfire has now destroyed at least one home and charred more than 5,800 acres in central Colorado. More than 450 firefighters and several aircraft have been assigned to the fire, which is burning in rough terrain south of Salida. The fire, which is 5% contained, has forced the evacuation of about 130 homes.
