In the Southern Hemisphere: Tropical cyclone (tc) 18s (Idai), located approximately 221 nm north-northwest of Europa Island, is tracking westward at 07 knots.

Tropical cyclone 19s (Savannah), located approximately 1412 nm east-southeast of Diego Garcia, is tracking southwestward at 08 knots.

Mozambique – Update – At least 66 people have been killed and 141,000 affected after heavy rains deluged central and northern Mozambique. The government has decreed a red alert.

USA – A window-rattling late winter storm brought blizzards, floods and a tornado across more than 25 states Wednesday, stretching from the northern Rocky Mountains to Texas and beyond. Hundreds of drivers were stranded on Colorado highways, including 500 in the Colorado Springs area alone. Scores of motorists took refuge at truck stops in eastern Wyoming while blowing snow forced portions of major highways to close in Colorado, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Iowa, USA – An Iowa city has been evacuated and an interstate shut down as rain and melting snow flood the western portion of the state. Harrison County Emergency Management has ordered a partial evacuation of Missouri Valley. People south of Highway 30 and east of Interstate 29 — about 10 percent of the city — have been told to leave. Parts of Missouri Valley, which is about 22 miles north of Council Bluffs and has about 2,600 people, are already underwater.

In the Eastern Pacific Ocean: Tropical Storm 05e (Daniel), located approximately 852 nm south of San Diego, is tracking north-northwestward at 09 knots.


Vietnam – Heavy rainfall in the northern mountainous regions of Viet Nam, including in the provinces of Lai Chau and Ha Giang, have caused extensive flash floods and landslides, killing five people and causing damage to infrastructure and agriculture.

Iowa, USA – Very intense rainfall caused flash flooding across Siouxland Sunday afternoon and evening, leaving most of the area under a flash flood warning. Major flooding happened in Akron, Iowa, over the weekend. There, the Big Sioux River crested at 23.51 feet Saturday.

In the Eastern Pacific: Tropical Storm Greg is located about 1290 mi…2080 km WSW of the southern tip of Baja California with maximum sustained winds…50 mph…85 km/h. Present movement…W or 270 degrees at 14 mph…22 km/h.

Tropical Storm Irwin is located about 665 mi…1070 km SSW of the southern tip of Baja California with maximum sustained winds…40 mph…65 km/h. Present movement…WNW or 285 degrees at 9 mph…15 km/h.

Tropical Storm Hilary is located about 485 mi…780 km SSE of Manzanillo Mexico and about 325 mi…520 km SSW of Acapulco Mexico with maximum sustained winds…40 mph…65 km/h. Present movement…WNW or 300 degrees at 15 mph…24 km/h.

In the Western Pacific: Tropical storm 10w (Roke), located approximately 33 nm east of Hong Kong, is tracking west-northwestward at 12 knots.

Tropical depression 07w (Noru), located approximately 268 nm north-west of Minami Tori Shima, is tracking westward at 05 knots.

Tropical storm 09w (Kulap), located approximately 696 nm north of Wake Island, is tracking west-northwestward at 09 knots.

Tropical storm 08w (Sonca), located approximately 197 nm east-northeast of Da Nang, Vietnam, is tracking westward at 03 knots.


New Zealand – A ferocious storm has buffeted the lower South Island of New Zealand overnight (Friday-Saturday), with three states of emergency declared in Christchurch, Timaru and Otago and the city of Dunedin accessible only by air. The southern city of 120,000 people was cut off by road after major landslips blocked access. Small coastal communities on the Otago Penninsula are also cut off. Livestock in Canterbury and Otago were urgently being moved to higher ground with numerous rivers rising to near historic levels and threatening to burst their banks. It is the second largest flood of the Taieri River in Otago on record.

Iowa, USA – Heavy rains Friday night and Saturday deluged the community of Sumner, and basement flooding and sandbagging were taking place in several Northeast Iowa communities. As much as 10 inches of rain fell near Fredericksburg during the stretch, according to one calculation. Fairbank and other area communities also were hard hit, many receiving 5 or more inches of rain Friday night and Saturday.

In the North Atlantic: Invest 97L is an area of disturbed weather in the North Atlantic that has the potential for further tropical development.

In the Eastern Pacific: Tropical Storm Roslyn is located about 750 mi…1210 km WSW of the southern tip of Baja California with maximum sustained winds…40 mph…65 km/h, Present movement…NNE or 20 degrees at 5 mph…7 km/h.

Invest 96E is an area of disturbed weather in the East Pacific that has the potential for further tropical development.

In the Western Pacific: Typhoon 20w (Megi), located approximately 341 nm southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, is tracking west-northwestward at 11 knots.


Iowa, USA – Thousands residents of Cedar Rapids have left their homes Sunday as floodwaters worsened in the area. Officials have asked to evacuate those living in about 5,000 downtown homes near the river. The National Weather Service expects the Cedar River to crest at 23 feet. If that crest comes to bear, this will be the second worst flood in Cedar Rapids history.

In the Eastern Pacific Ocean:

Tropical storm Douglas is located about 450 mi (720 km) SW of the southern tip of Baja California.

Tropical storm Elida is located about 105 mi (165 km) S of Manzanillo, Mexico. Elida is expected to become nearly stationary on Tuesday and meander off the coast of southwestern Mexico through Wednesday. The center of Elida and the strongest winds are expected to remain offshore of the coast of southwestern Mexico.

In the Atlantic:

Tropical depression One is located about 105 mi (170 km) SE of Cape Canaveral Florida. A tropical storm watch is in effect for the East Coast of Florida.

The area of disturbed weather over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, located about 130 miles east-northeast of Melbourne, Florida on Monday morning (Invest 91L), has grown more organized.

Heavy rains of at least 2 – 4″ will likely affect the Northwest Bahamas and eastern coast of Florida Monday through Wednesday. Heavier rains of 4 – 8″ are likely. Heavy rains of 2 – 4″ will spread to coastal Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina on Thursday and Friday, and tropical storm conditions are possible along the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts on Thursday and Friday.

Dry air, in combination with potentially moderate wind shear, will slow development of 91L. If 91L makes landfall over Florida on Tuesday or Wednesday, interaction with land will also interfere with development.


China – A landslide in SW China has claimed the life of a person and left 15 others missing. The landslide occurred in Fugong County in Yunnan Province.

Iowa, USA – A derecho, a violent wind event, swept from the Midwest to the western Great Lakes Monday, bringing hurricane-force wind gusts, reported tornadoes and heavy rain into Iowa and Nebraska.

The storms are blamed for one death just southwest of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where police say a man was trapped inside a collapsed building. Several people were injured during a minor league baseball game in Cedar Rapids when they were trying to put the tarp over the field.

In Illinois, flights were cancelled at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway International airports and Commonwealth Edison reports electric power to thousands was disrupted by a derecho that moved across the area Monday afternoon. A second line of thunderstorms behind the derecho intensified as it moved from Iowa into Illinois and became extremely powerful as it crossed the southwestern suburbs of Chicago. Trees up to 50 feet tall were toppled and uprooted in Plainfield. 85 to 90 percent of the city of Morris, including its hospital, was without power late Monday evening after powerful storms knocked down hundreds of trees.

Guatemala – Landslide caused by heavy rains has claimed lives of at least five people and injured three others. Homes were destroyedin San Pedro Necta, Huehuetenango.

Sri Lanka – Torrential rains continued to lash most parts of Sri Lanka Monday causing floods and submerging roads in low-lying areas. Low-lying areas in the Agalawatta, Welipanna, Matugama, Paalinda Nuwara and Omatta Divisions of Kalutara district are affected by floods. Local media reports said 9 people have been killed and another two are missing due to earth slips in the areas of Matugama, Kithulgoda and Thalangama.

Iowa, USA – At least one tornado has been reported in north-central Iowa as storms moved across the mostly rural part of the state, Sunday.

In the South Indian Ocean:

Tropical cyclone Hellen is located approximately 345 nm north-northwest of Antananarivo, Madagascar. Hellen, a low pressure area centred over the Mozambique Channel organized into Tropical Cyclone 21S (Hellen) on Friday afternoon.


8 Tornadoes Reportedly Hit Missouri, Southern Iowa late on Thursday.

Jakarta – Heavy rain that poured the city until Saturday (3/29) predawn, had caused two urban villages in East Jakarta, Kampung Pulo and Jatinegara, flooded. In addition, the overflowed of Ciliwung River and water from Bogor have inundated residents houses. The flood began to inundated 600 houses in Kampung Pulo since 3 am. The water level reached 30-100 cm. No one was evacuated.

Tanzania – One person was killed and fiver others went missing on Friday after floods triggered by ongoing heavy rains in many parts of Tanzania derailed a cargo train in the country’s central town of Mpwapwa. Mpwapwa district commissioner Christopher Kangoye said the floods swept away the locomotive engine of the cargo train that was pulling 11 petrol and diesel tankers and nine wagons with different types of cargo.

In the Atlantic:

Tropical Storm Karen is heading for the Gulf Coast this weekend. In the past 24 hours Karen has been less successful in fighting the battle against hostile atmospheric conditions, which has led to weakening.

Tropical Storm Karen has prompted state of emergency in the U.S. state of Louisiana which is forecast to hit the Gulf Coast between the state and the Florida Panhandle in the next few days.

Extremely heavy rainfall, high tides and flash floods is predicted in the coastal and inland parishes of emergency declared Louisiana.

As of 7 a.m. CDT (1200 UTC) October 4, Tropical Storm Karen was located about 445 km south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

In the Western Pacific:

Typhoon Fitow is headed for China; east of Fitow, another tropical storm has developed and is also expected to track toward Asia. It is headed for a landfall in China by Monday.

Tropical Storm Danas has formed east of Fitow; the Joint Typhoon Warning Center’s latest forecast is for it to become a typhoon and track toward South Korea or Japan next week.


A tornado hit Wayne and Sioux City, Iowa, USA at about 6:30 p.m local time, the National Weather Service said.

Landslide in Western Kenya

Landslide in Olutrot village in Narok county destroyed several houses and buried two children.

Floods have also displaced about 1,920 people in Garissa after the Tana river burst its banks.

Flash flooding in southeast Iowa, USA

Heavy rainfall has caused flash flooding in southeast Iowa. Flash flood warnings have been issued to affected areas.

Tornado in Qixing, China

Tornado in the Qixing district of China has injured at least six people. The tornado also damaged twenty-two houses.

Hailstorms in Odisha, India

Hailstorms in Balasore area of Odisha have injured at least three people. Electricity and telecommunication facilities have also been disrupted.
