Nigeria – In a report of 19 October, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said that torrential rainfall, river floods and flash floods since September have cumulatively impacted 192,594 people across 22 states in Nigeria. Furthermore, around 826 injuries and 155 fatalities have so far been recorded and 24,134 people are reported to be displaced.

Nigeria – Days of flooding from the overflowing Niger river has displaced over 50,000 people in the state of Kogi in central Nigeria. Local media report that at least 66 communities in the state have been affected and 1 person is thought to have died. Many victims have lost their livelihoods after crops and livestock were washed away.

Cambodia – Further flooding has struck in parts of Cambodia after heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Noul. Disaster authorities report 11 people have died. Previously flooding had affected Preah Sihanouk province, where 2,000 people were affected and 1 fatality was reported.

Indonesia – Further flooding has struck in Indonesia, this time in West Java Province along with parts of the capital, Jakarta. Officials report 2 people have died and 20 have been injured. In West Java, heavy rainfall from 20 September caused the Cipeuncit River to break its banks flooding areas of Cicurug District in Sukabumi Regency on 21 September. Flooding was also reported in Parung Kuda and Cidahu Districts in the Regency. Meanwhile flooding from 21 September inundated roads across the capital, Jakarta. Flooding was reported in 49 locations in the city, with 104 people displaced. Some areas of the city recorded more than 200mm of rain in 24 hours to 22 September.

Mexico – At least 2 people have died after heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslides in the state of Oaxaca, southwestern Mexico. Flash floods, overflowing rivers and landslides have prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency in several municipalities in the Papaloapan Region.

India – Teams from India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been called on to rescue flood victims in the state of Karnataka. Flooding struck after heavy rainfall from 19 September, affecting the city of Udupi and the surrounding areas. Udupi recorded just under 450 mm of rain in 24 hours to 20 September 2020. Local media said several rivers broke their banks damaging at least 4 bridges.

South East Asia – At least 7 people have died after Tropical Storm Noul made its way across the countries of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand in South East Asia. Noul made landfall near the city of Da Nang in Vietnam on 18 September 2020. Disaster authorities in Vietnam reported storm-related fatalities in the provinces of Thua Thien Hue (04), Ha Tinh and Quang Tri. A further 112 people were injured. Ten houses were completely destroyed in Thua Thien Hue and 3 in Quang Tri. Thousands of other houses suffered damage, mostly as a result of strong winds. Around 50,000 people were evacuated from affected areas. The storm then headed inland, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to parts of Laos, where flooding was reported in Xekong and Champassak provinces. In Thailand officials said 1,932 households across 27 provinces were affected by the storm from 19 to 21 September. One fatality was reported in Ranong province after strong winds uprooted a tree.

Nigeria – Floods washed away at least two million tons of rice in Nigeria. That is more than 25% of the previously projected national output of 8 million tons, according to estimates by a farmers’ organization. At least 450,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) were destroyed in Kebbi, the country’s main rice-growing state.

Bangladesh – Six new deaths raised the death toll from floods in Bangladesh to 257, with people facing difficulties amid the coronavirus pandemic, including losses to the country’s agriculture and fish farming, according to officials. Of the total fatalities, 212 drowned, 27 died of snakebites and 15 were killed in thunderstorms, while three lost their lives to other diseases. Furthermore, 78,000 people were infected with waterborne diseases.

Nigeria – The International Organization for Migration reported on 10 August that flooding has displaced almost 15,000 people in north west and north central Nigeria. Flooding affected the states of Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara between 03 and 09 August. Over 1,8000 shelters were damaged and almost 10,000 people affected in Katsina state. Two people died in Baure. In Kaduna, 2 fatalities were reported in Jema’A, where flooding damaged 36 shelters and affected over 3,300 people.

Panama – At least 11 people have lost their lives after heavy rainfall caused flooding in several province of Panama over the last few days. 11 members of the same family, including 9 children, died after their home was swept away by flash flooding.

Pakistan – In Balochistan, 8 people have died in floods in recent days, with many more reportedly missing. Over 140 homes have been completely destroyed. Meanwhile in Sindh Province, heavy rainfall from 06 August caused flooding in Karachi, Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sakrand, Tando Jam and Thatta. Severe flooding occurred in the west of the province from 08 August after flood water from Balochistan made its way downstream along the Nai Gaj river.

Yemen – At least 17 people have lost their lives in recent floods in Yemen during 22 – 25 July. 3 people died after heavy rains in Bani Qais district in Hajjah Governorate washed away dozens of huts and tents in camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Elsewhere, flooding caused material damages in Lahj, Shabwah and Abyan governorates. Heavy rain also affected the capital Sana’a, with flooding reported.

Bangladesh – Government and humanitarian agencies in Bangladesh report that 3.3 million people have now been affected by flooding that began in June. According to a report of 25 July by the Humanitarian Coordination Task Team (HCTT), 21 districts of the country have now been affected, with 16 of them seeing moderate to severe impacts. Flooding has inundated over 34,000 km2 of land, which amounts to 24% of the country. Almost 75% of Jamalpur district is flooded. Over 90 people have died in flooding since 30 June, including 41 children. Approximately 56,000 people have been displaced to 1,086 flood shelters.

Nigeria – At least 7 people have died in flash flooding and heavy rainfall in Niger state in central Nigeria. Local media reported torrential rainfall lasting several hours late on 24 July caused flooding and damage in Rafin Sanyi area of Suleja Local Government Area. Rain and flooding downed trees and power lines, causing electricity outages. According to a local government spokesperson, several houses collapsed in the area, trapping people in their homes. As of 25 July, 7 bodies had been recovered but more are feared missing. Rescue and recovery teams have been dispatched in the area in the search for survivors.

Vietnam – At least 5 people lost their lives after heavy rainfall from 20 July triggered flooding and landslides in northern Vietnam. Vietnam’s Disaster Management Authority reported flooding and landslides in Ha Giang and Cao Bang Provinces. Ha Giang City recorded 378mm of rain in 24 hours to 21 July, while Dao Duc recorded 395 mm and Cao Bo (both in Ha Giang Province) 401 mm.

USA, Mexico – As it weakened to a tropical storm Sunday morning, Hanna pushed inland through the Rio Grande Valley, leaving flooding and damage in its path in a wide swath of South Texas and northern Mexico.

India – More than 100 animals, including 10 one-horned rhinoceroses, have died in massive flooding at the famed Kaziranga game reserve in northeastern India, officials said. The flooding is the result of a monsoon that has dumped rain across parts of India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Malaysia – Over 1,000 people have evacuated their homes in Sabah State, Malaysia, after flooding over the last few days. Flooding began on 27 June and has since affected 152 villages across 11 districts.

Wisconsin, USA – On June 28 and 29, parts of St. Croix County received over seven inches of rain causing flooding and washed out roads across the county. The areas experiencing significant flooding are the Municipalities of Kinnickinnic, Pleasant Valley, Rush River, Eau Galle, Warren, Hammond, Baldwin, Springfield, Erin Prairie, Emerald, Glenwood, Cylon, and Forest. At one point over 50 roads were closed in the area due to flooding.

Poland – Further severe weather including storms and heavy rain affected parts of Poland on 29 June. IMGW report that several locations recorded more than 50mm of rain in 24 hours, including Bielany is a district in Warsaw, which saw 56.6 mm. The worst of the storm affected the provinces or voivodeships of Podlaskie, Masovia (which includes the capital Warsaw), Holy Cross Province (Świętokrzyskie) and Lesser Poland (Małopolskie). Over 1,300 homes were damaged by flooding, as were 241 roads.

India – Recent flooding in Assam, north eastern India, has worsened, with disaster authorities reporting that over 900,000 people are now affected. This is the second wave of flooding in the state, which began around 20 June.

China – More flooding has affected parts of Sichuan province, southwestern China, leaving over 20 people dead or missing. Flooding struck in Sichuan’s Mianning county in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture after storms brought heavy rain.

Nigeria – Dozens of buildings have been damaged after more flash flooding in Lagos State, Nigeria. Flooding was caused by a heavy downpour but significantly worsened by blocked drainage channels,

Nigeria – At least three people have been killed or are missing due to flash floods in Kwara, Nigeria. A bridge embankment collapsed in Oko-Erin leaving one person dead and two others missing. Heavy downpours destroyed 100 houses and displaced at least 300 people in Eket Local Government Area.

Ivory Coast – Heavy rains and floods in parts of southern Ivory Coast have damaged buildings, blocked roads, disrupted transport and caused landslides. The districts of Andre Chateau d’Eau, Abobo-Belleville and Riviera Palmeraie were the worst affected.

Indonesia – Flooding has once again hit parts of Aceh Province in Indonesia after heavy rain caused several rivers to overflow on 16 June.

Guatemala & Honduras – Heavy rain has triggered flooding and landslides in parts of Guatemala and Honduras over the last few days. Two people have died after heavy rain triggered a landslide in western Honduras. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) in Guatemala reports that landslides and flooding have affected over 4,000 people from 16 June. A landslide in San Pedro Necta, Huehuetenango, has blocked parts of the CA-1 road, preventing the passage of hundreds of vehicles. Landslides were also reported in Nentón, about 35km to the north, where Conred has distributed relief supplies to affected families.

Thailand – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in Thailand reports that severe weather including wind storms, high waves and heavy rain has affected several provinces over the last few days.

England – Heavy rain has caused flash floods in the Bournemouth and Poole areas. The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Bournemouth, stating there was a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Tanzania – Floods have affected the north-east of Tanzania since last week. According to media reports, 14 people died in Handeni district (Tanga Region). Since mid October, several floods have led to a total death toll of 44. In addition, a number of houses, roads, bridges and crop farms have been damaged. For the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rain is forecast over the central and northern regions.

UAE – Roads in the eastern region of Sharjah and Fujairah have been closed after high waves caused flooding in both emirates. Corniche Roads in Khor Fakkan and Kalba were closed on Monday after midnight as high waves breached the barricade and flooded the surrounding streets amid an unusually high tide combined with the effect of Tropical Cyclone Kyarr.

Nigeria – Over 100 villages in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Adamawa have been trapped by floods, caused by persistent rainfall in that part of the country, a local official said on Monday. He described the current flood situation as the worst ever experienced in the state. The villages affected cut across seven local government areas of Adamawa, affecting mostly farmers.

UK – Thousands of homes remain at risk of flooding after torrential downpours this weekend caused rivers across the country to burst their banks.

Japan – The sky turned in deep purple colour in Japan surprising the locals, just before the arrival of Typhoon Hagibis. The typhoon touched down southwest of Tokyo on Saturday. An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 shook the area shortly before the same time as the typhoon was making landfall. The earthquake was felt across Tokyo and Chiba. Typhoon Hagibis has brought heavy rain and strong winds to the region and is expected to be Japan’s worst typhoon in six decades. Japan’s military scrambled Sunday to rescue people trapped by flooding after powerful Typhoon Hagibis ripped across the country, killing at least 11 people and leaving more than a dozen missing. The storm’s heavy rain triggered deadly landslides and caused rivers to burst their banks. By Sunday morning, the significantly weakened storm had moved back off land, but serious flooding was reported in central Japan’s Nagano, where a burst levee sent water from the Chikuma river gushing into residential neighbourhoods, flooding homes up to the second floor. Hagibis smashed into the main Japanese island of Honshu around 7:00 pm (1000 GMT) Saturday as one of the most violent typhoons in recent years, with wind gusts of up to 216 kilometres per hour (134 miles per hour). At the storm’s peak, more than seven million people were placed under non-compulsory evacuation orders, with tens of thousands heeding the call and moving into government shelters.

Nigeria – An 11 year old boy died after being swept away in the flood water in the Alimosho area of Lagos. The heavy downpour has left many homes flooded and blocked the drainage in Lekki city in Lagos state.

Nigeria – The death toll from floods across much of central and southern Nigeria has reached 199, the national disaster agency said on Wednesday, almost doubling the number of people killed from three weeks earlier. The almost annual floods, exacerbated by poor infrastructure and lack of planning to protect against inundation, are the worst since 2012, when at least 363 people died.

Majorca – At least 10 people were killed and a child remains missing after heavy rain and flash floods hit the Spanish island of Majorca on Tuesday night, regional authorities said Wednesday. Seven roads in the area were cut off, regional authorities said. Some schools were closed Wednesday because of the floods. Five of the deaths occurred in the Sant Llorenç area, about 35 miles east of the Balearic island’s capital, Palma.

The remnants of Rosa could bring as much as a year’s worth of rain to desert areas such as California’s Imperial Valley and Arizona’s Yuma County — both significant producers of vegetables for the nation.

Greece – Swirling winds and torrential rain brought flash floods to parts of Greece on Saturday as a rare type of storm known as a “Medicane” which can develop in certain conditions over the Mediterranean Sea hit the country. Ships were held at Greece’s main ports and traffic was disrupted in several areas as roads flooded due to the heavy rain. Gusting winds blew garbage bins off the streets of Athens and led to power cuts and falling trees across the country.

Nigeria – Floods in Edo State have killed at least 6 people with no fewer than 42 communities, 8,000 houses and 35,150 persons affected by the floods.

Nigeria – Nearly 200 people have died in flooding caused by heavy seasonal rains across 12 states in Nigeria. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Thursday that 199 people were killed after the main Niger and Benue rivers burst their banks.A national disaster was declared in several central and southern states. More than 286 000 people have been left homeless.

Connecticut, USA – South Connecticut was hit by flash floods with some areas seeing more than six inches of rain. Some roads were completely impassable following the downpour and fire departments warned motorists to avoid driving.

East Coast, USA – Florence is expected to produce heavy to excessive rainfall through Tuesday. Portions of the northern Mid-Atlantic states and southern New England are expected to receive an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain…with isolated maximum amounts of 6 inches possible. The storm is blamed for at least 32 deaths, say officials quoted by the Associated Press. Twenty-four of those were in North Carolina. Life-threatening floods are expected to continue all this week, according to the National Weather Service. In Virginia, one person was killed as a result of a tornado associated with Florence.

Nigeria – Rainy season flooding across Nigeria has killed more than 100 people, as water poured over the banks of the West African country’s two major rivers, and into numerous cities and towns. Over the weekend, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency reported that the Benue and Niger Rivers were close to reaching levels that in 2012 led to floods that killed more than 350 people and wiped out scores of homes, farms and other property.
