Plague – DR Congo

According to a recent UNICEF Humanitarian Report, in Ituri province in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), officials have reported 286 cases of bubonic plague, including 27 deaths were reported since August. Rethy and Biringi health zones have the highest number of cases, with 210 registered cases, including 15 deaths.

Plague – DR Congo

Ituri province, in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has notified an upsurge of plague cases in the health zone of Rethy. From 11 June to 9 August 2020, a total of 73 cases with 10 deaths.

Plague – Colorado, USA

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is reporting the second case of human plague in the state this summer. The case, reported to the department on Sept. 3, is a resident from a rural county in Colorado.

Plague – Mongolia

Health officials from the Mongolian National Center for Zoonotic Diseases are reporting three additional suspected cases of the bubonic plague in Uvurkhangai province. Three members of a family are affected–mother and her two children–after eating marmot meat recently. Officials say the patients are currently hospitalized.

Year to date in Mongolia, 16 suspected plague cases have been reported, of which, four are laboratory confirmed.

Plague – California, USA

El Dorado County health officials have been notified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) that a South Lake Tahoe resident has tested positive for plague. This is the first case in California in five years.

Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever – Senegal

On Aug. 12, health officials reported a Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Senegal. The case was detected as part of the epidemiological surveillance system in the country.

Rabies in Elephants – India

Some 16 elephants have died from rabies in the past 3 weeks at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam, India, according to Times Now News report. According to Park Director P.Shivkumar, the domestic elephants contracted the lethal virus from wild foxes in the park that are biting the animals. This has prompted a massive anti-rabies vaccination drive.

Plague – Mongolia

The Mongolia National Center for Zoonotic Disease reported an additional suspected human bubonic plague case in western Mongolia. The case is a 37-year-old man from Tsetseg soum, Khovd province and is currently hospitalized in critical condition. It is reported the patient ate marmot meat.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis – Massachusetts, USA

Massachusetts State health officials confirmed the second human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus infection in a female in her 60s who was exposed to EEE in Hampden County.

Ebola – DR Congo

The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Équateur Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to rise, with increasing new confirmed cases along with geographical spread to new health areas. Through August 4, there has been a total of 74 cases (70 confirmed and four probable) including 32 deaths.

Since the beginning of 2020 to date, Ituri Province, in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported a total of 75 cases and 17 deaths.

Monkeypox – DR Congo

Since the beginning of the year through July 5, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported a total of 2,591 suspected monkeypox cases and 97 deaths. This includes 115 cases and four deaths recorded during the week ending July 5.

Dengue Fever – Singapore

Singapore environment officials recorded a record number of dengue fever cases last week as the city-state races for a record season. 1,733 dengue cases were reported in the week ending 18 July 2020. This figure is the highest number of weekly dengue cases ever recorded in Singapore.

Plague – DR Congo

In a follow-up on the plague situation in the health zone of Rethy in Ituri province, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, since the upsurge of cases began in early June 2020, a total of 45 cases including nine deaths (case fatality rate: 20%) have been reported.

The Mongolia Ministry of Health is reporting (computer translated) a suspect case of plague in the western part of the country. The person reportedly ate an infected marmot.

Plague – DR Congo

In a follow-up on the plague situation in the Ituri endemic focus of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Djugu territory, officials with Ecohealth Alliance said in a post on ProMED-mail that the cases have risen to 29 (17 female, 12 male) with 6 deaths (CFR = 0.2).

Hamburger Disease -South Korea

South Korean President Moon Jae-in ordered the inspection of meals served at preschools and daycare centers across the country following an outbreak of a disease that can cause kidney failure in children. Officials expressed concern regarding a possible outbreak of hemolytic uremic syndrome, sometimes referred to as hamburger disease, among children in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. On Friday, authorities said 102 of the 202 people tested showed symptoms of EHEC infection. Among those tested, 57 people were confirmed for the pathogen.

Plague – DR Congo

Officials with the Ecohealth Alliance are reporting a plague cluster in the Ituri endemic focus of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The notification was published on ProMED-mail. As of 16 Jun 2020, of the 10 cases (of which 4 deaths were reported), 8 were diagnosed with bubonic plague and 2 were diagnosed with septicemic plague.

Ebola – DR Congo

No new confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) have been reported in Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu Provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 27 April 2020.

African Swine Fever – Nigeria

Almost a million pigs have been culled by Nigerian farmers in response to an explosion of African swine fever (ASF). The outbreak began around Lagos and parts of neighbouring Ogun state earlier this year, pig farmers say, but has now spread to many other parts of the country.

Plague – DR Congo

After going several week without a reported human plague case in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), new cases were reported between mid-February and mid-March. Since the beginning of the year a total of 20 suspected bubonic plague cases with 7 deaths (case fatality ratio 35%) were notified.

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) – Saudi Arabia

From 1 through 31 March 2020, the National IHR Focal Point of Saudi Arabia reported 15 additional cases of MERS-CoV infection, including five associated deaths.

African Swine Fever – India

News media from India are reporting that African swine fever has been detected in the country’s northeastern state of Assam, where the disease is said to have killed around 2,500 pigs. This is the first confirmed ASF outbreak in India,

Plague – DR Congo

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported an additional 12 human plague cases during the week ending Nov. 16, bringing the total to 50 bubonic plague cases this year in Ituri province.

Bird Flu – China

Taiwan health officials reported today on two human H9N2 avian influenza on Mainland China. The cases, from November 12th and 22nd, are the first reported in China this season.

Measles – Tonga

In a follow-up on the measles outbreak on Tonga, the number of measles cases in the outbreak has risen to 485 confirmed or suspected cases as of Dec. 9. No deaths have been recorded and currently no one is hospitalized.

Measles – Samoa

The measles outbreak in Samoa has grown to 4,898 cases since the outbreak started, with 83 recorded in the last 24 hours. To date, 71 measles related deaths have been recorded.

Bird Flu – UK

Cases of bird flu have been confirmed at a chicken farm in Suffolk, the government has said. All 27,000 birds at the commercial farm will be culled after a number were found to have the H5 type of avian flu, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said on Tuesday and a 1km restriction zone has been implemented to limit the risk of the disease spreading.

The Inner Mongolia Health Authority of Mainland China announced a confirmed case of bubonic plague Wednesday. This is the fifth case of plague to be reported by China and the fourth this month.

Lassa Fever – Netherlands

On 20 November 2019, WHO was informed by The Netherlands’ International Health Regulations (IHR) National Focal Point of one imported case of Lassa fever from Sierra Leone. The patient was a male doctor, a Dutch national who worked in a rural Masanga hospital in Tonkolili district, Northern province in Sierra Leone.

Circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 – Pakistan

Through national disease surveillance, an outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type-2 (cVDPV2) has been confirmed in Pakistan in 2019. Between 7 July and 3 November 2019, 11 children have been paralysed from cVDPV2 in Pakistan.
