Tennessee, USA – Massive flash flooding ravaged central Tennessee on Wednesday night. The flooding killed one person and sparked numerous water rescues. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) the flood-related death occurred in Pegram, Tennessee, when a woman was swept away by floodwaters while trying to walk across a bridge. An estimated three to six inches of rain fell in central Tennessee on Wednesday night when a band of heavy rain stalled over the region. Thursday morning saw more settled water, however, some roads are still closed.

Queensland, Australia – The Queensland government has announced an inquiry into the historic flooding in Townsville, as evidence mounts that local authorities failed to anticipate the extreme nature of the recent record rainfall. In the west of the state, graziers have been confronted with scenes described by one mayor as “hell”, as it became clear up to 300,000 cattle had died in the floods.

Central USA – A potent storm slammed the central United States on Thursday, bringing a ferocious mix of wild weather from blizzard conditions to flash floods. Schools, universities and businesses were closed Thursday in several states as travel proved difficult if not impossible. More than 130,000 customers were without power in Michigan due to the storm. At least five people have been killed. Four died in traffic accidents on snowy or icy roads in the central United States over the past few days and a student died in Seattle after slipping on the ice. Earlier in the week, the storm brought heavy snow and ice to portions of the West Coast, including the Seattle and San Francisco areas. As of midday Thursday, the National Weather Service reported that more than 20 million people were threatened by winter weather, while another 25 million were bracing for flooding.

In the Western Pacific: Tropical depression 03w (Three), located approximately 244 nm north-northwest of Yap, is tracking northwestward at 04 knots.


Australia – Homes were damaged and drivers trapped in their cars as flash flooding wreaked havoc in the Geelong area last night. Videos uploaded to social media showed roads looking more like rivers, and water spouting out of gutters like fountains. There were reports of flash floods, building damage and flooded homes.

Tennessee, USA – Officials say heavy rain that fell over the weekend has caused road flooding and school closures in Middle and East Tennessee. In the Nashville suburb of Franklin, portions of the Harpeth River overflowed into a section of a sewer system under repair — sweeping raw sewage into streets. Schools in about a dozen counties were closed Monday. Parts of the Tennessee River overflowed its banks on Monday after TVA engineers opened spillways on the Chickamauga dam.


Wildfires – Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, USA

Dozens of wildfires are burning out of control in the Southeast and southern Appalachians, charring thousands of acres and spreading smoke across several states.

As of Monday, 97 fires were active in Tennessee, and smoke from the blazes could be seen as far away as southern Ohio.

In neighbouring Kentucky, 33 wildfires were burning statewide and had consumed 15,950 acres according to the state’s Department of Forestry. Burn bans were in place in 60 counties across the state, and Gov. Matt Bevin declared a state of emergency on Thursday.

Residents were being evacuated in the North Carolina mountains Tuesday as thousands of acres are burning in at least 18 wildfires that have doubled in acreage since the weekend.

Typhoon Nepartak is located approximately 149 nm southwest of Taipei, Taiwan, and is tracking west-northwestward at 10 knots.


Tennessee, USA – Tennessee declared a state of emergency Thursday after torrential rain triggered major flash flooding in parts of Kentucky and Tennessee.

Ethiopia – Floods across Ethiopia have severely impacted the ability of livestock-dependent Ethiopians to recover from 18-months of drought brought on by El Nino. Reports from Ethiopia’s National Flood Task Force show that close to 690,000 people are now likely be affected, with more than 320,000 estimated to be displaced. Over 55,000 hectares of land, much of it pasture, has been flooded. Thousands of livestock have died due to flash floods and landslides, brought on by the long-awaited spring season rains.


Wildfires – Oklahoma, USA

Oklahoma authorities on Tuesday urged residents of the small town of Freedom to evacuate as a wildfire flared in the same area near the border with Kansas where blazes last month scorched hundreds of square miles.

The National Weather Service warned that most of the state was under critical to extremely critical fire conditions due to dry air, warm temperatures and strong winds. Blazes also broke out across Kansas, where some small-town residents were forced to leave their homes. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Wildfires – Tennessee, USA

Cocke County fire crews teamed up with more than 100 personnel from the U.S. Forest Service and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency to battle the wildfire blaze ripping across the west side of Stone Mountain.

The wildfire started on Monday afternoon, and has scorched more than 1,000 acres of land as of late Tuesday night. The U.S. Forest Service said Wednesday morning the fire is still only contained about 10 percent.

Several new wildfires broke out in east Tennessee, USA on Thanksgiving Day. Wildfires are burning along Interstate 75 in Campbell and Scott counties, north of Knoxville. Fires were also reported in Grainger County and near the Sevier County/Cocke County line.
