Malaysia – Over 1,000 people have evacuated their homes in Sabah State, Malaysia, after flooding over the last few days. Flooding began on 27 June and has since affected 152 villages across 11 districts.

Wisconsin, USA – On June 28 and 29, parts of St. Croix County received over seven inches of rain causing flooding and washed out roads across the county. The areas experiencing significant flooding are the Municipalities of Kinnickinnic, Pleasant Valley, Rush River, Eau Galle, Warren, Hammond, Baldwin, Springfield, Erin Prairie, Emerald, Glenwood, Cylon, and Forest. At one point over 50 roads were closed in the area due to flooding.

Poland – Further severe weather including storms and heavy rain affected parts of Poland on 29 June. IMGW report that several locations recorded more than 50mm of rain in 24 hours, including Bielany is a district in Warsaw, which saw 56.6 mm. The worst of the storm affected the provinces or voivodeships of Podlaskie, Masovia (which includes the capital Warsaw), Holy Cross Province (Świętokrzyskie) and Lesser Poland (Małopolskie). Over 1,300 homes were damaged by flooding, as were 241 roads.

India – Recent flooding in Assam, north eastern India, has worsened, with disaster authorities reporting that over 900,000 people are now affected. This is the second wave of flooding in the state, which began around 20 June.

China – More flooding has affected parts of Sichuan province, southwestern China, leaving over 20 people dead or missing. Flooding struck in Sichuan’s Mianning county in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture after storms brought heavy rain.

Nigeria – Dozens of buildings have been damaged after more flash flooding in Lagos State, Nigeria. Flooding was caused by a heavy downpour but significantly worsened by blocked drainage channels,

India – The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has published two satellite images of Kerala, comparing the photos of devastation caused by the floods across the state and the situation prior to that. The before and after images of the area surrounding the Vembanad lake, including areas in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Changanassery and Thiruvalla. The pictorial representations give a clear indication of what the situation in Kerala is after having undergone heavy rainfall for the past few weeks.

Wisconsin, USA – Rain-weary parts of Wisconsin were hammered once again by heavy rain Monday night into Tuesday, triggering flash floods that washed out roads, triggered mudslides and prompted evacuations. The line of severe thunderstorms raced across southern Wisconsin into Tuesday evening, enhancing already high water in southeastern Wisconsin.

Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, USA – Heavy rains and flash flooding caused severe damage in northern Michigan Saturday night into Sunday morning. Massive sinkholes opened up and some roads were completely washed out. Lines of thunderstorms crawled across northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin on Sunday after overnight flash flooding washed out roads and highways, as a heat wave sent temperatures into the high 90s elsewhere in the Midwest. The National Weather Service issued flood warnings from east-central Minnesota across northwestern Wisconsin because of the potential for rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour in some places.

Bangladesh – The first monsoon rains have hit camps in Bangladesh housing around a million Rohingya refugees, triggering floods and landslides but no casualties or major damage so far, officials said Sunday. Aid agencies have been warning that the monsoon season could prompt a humanitarian catastrophe in coming months at what is the world’s biggest refugee camp, sheltering people fleeing violence in Myanmar. The sites in southeastern Bangladesh are predicted to be hit by powerful cyclones and by more than 2.5 metres of rainfall over the coming three months of monsoon – roughly triple what Britain gets in a year.

Wisconsin, USA – Flash flooding hit parts of southwestern Wisconsin, southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa Saturday. The National Weather Service says 6 to 7 inches of rain fell in Spring Valley in southeastern Minnesota. Northern and central Grant County received up to 8 inches of additional rainfall Saturday night. Some rural roads are washed out and impassable. Crews have rescued a number of people from stranded vehicles after flash flooding in southwestern Wisconsin.

Wildfires – Arizona, USA

Firefighters battling a wildfire in north-central Arizona were hampered Monday by strong winds and dry conditions as residents of surrounding communities remained out of their homes for another day. Authorities said some homes were lost as the wildfire consumed almost 14 square miles (35 square kilometers) south of Flagstaff. Crews on Monday were assessing exactly how many structures have burned, but estimated around 30.

A total of 43 wildfires have been reported around Wisconsin by the DNR over the past two days. A majority of the fires were in the south-central region of the state. A state of emergency was declared, although the majority of the fires were small, between 10 – 20 acres.

Wildfires are burning across Manitoba. The province is deploying firefighters and water bombers to several communities where wildfires are consuming forestland. Several fires within Winnipeg have been extinguished, but fire officials say the dry spring teamed with high winds are the perfect recipe for big fires.

New Zealand – New Zealand has begun cleaning up after being hit by the remnants of Cyclone Gita, which damaged buildings and left thousands without power. Four regions across the country remain in a state of emergency, though the status has been lifted for the city of Christchurch. Up to 1,000 people are still stranded in Golden Bay on the South Island due to flooding. Authorities say they may send ferries to pick them up. Numerous roads still remain closed across the country as repair efforts begin.

Mozambique – Humanitarian organisations are making frantic efforts to assist thousands of Mozambicans recently displaced by floods that killed at least 14 people. The northern provinces were hit by a tropical depression which brought heavy rains. A total of 80 000 people were affected in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa. In Nampula, following a government request, the World Food Programme (WFP) is providing food support to 37 000 people.

Wisconsin, USA – Several busy roads are closed Tuesday due to flooding across Rock County, Wisconsin. People in areas with flooding are encouraged to drive carefully and slowly on Wednesday, and until the icy roads are cleared up. The cold weather may freeze the flooded areas creating dangerous conditions.

In the South Indian Ocean: Tropical Cyclone “Carlos” (04S) is moving toward the islands of Mauritius and Reunion and is expected to bring wind gusts of 80 km/h, strengthening in some areas on Monday night. High seas are anticipated. Flood-like situation may also affect the rivers and waterways. People are advised not to venture to these locations and avoid sea excursions. Carlos is moving southward at 9 km/h.

Fiji – Heavy rains from last night until this morning caused flash flooding with more rain forecast throughout the week.

Australia – Rain battered Victoria on Sunday and led to flash flooding, power outages and damages to homes in the Melbourne area. Only 5-10 millimetres of rain is expected on Monday, following on from a wet Sunday that saw up to 33mm in parts of Melbourne and 46mm at Arthurs Seat.

USA – The Wisconsin River has reached flood stage at Portage, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for Columbia County. The river reaches flood stage at 17 feet. As of 5:45 PM on Sunday, the river was at 17.84 feet.

USA – Ada County Highway District crews worked to clear heavy flooding in the Southfork Subdivision near South Cole and Amity roads in Boise, Idaho. Homeowners placed sandbags around their properties as ACHD trucks worked to pump water from the streets.

Wisconsin, USA – Update – At least two people have died in the flooding caused by powerful storms that damaged homes, washed out roads and stranded motorists in Wisconsin.

South Sudan – The residents of Aweil are furious at the government for not constructing dikes that would have prevented the current flooding caused by heavy rainfalls. Over 3000 households are said to be affected by the floods in Aweil town. The poor drainage system in the State has left Aweil experiencing floods every year. The rainy season is just beginning and is expected to peak in August and September.

India – Lightning strikes in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa have claimed the lives of at least 32 people. At least twenty three people died in seven districts of Andhra Pradesh and nine other killed in the eastern state of Orissa.

Lightning has claimed the lives of three children in Kalaiya, Nepal.

Severe hailstorms have caused heavy damage to agricultural crops in eight villages in Akhmeta in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. The hailstorms which lasted for 20 minutes and damaged 80 percent of the vineyards in Akhmeta.

Wildfires

Wildfires Break Out Near Park Rapids and NW Wisconsin, USA

High temperatures and desert-like humidity readings are helping drive an outbreak of wildfires in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Firefighters have spent the past two days battling at least 25 wildfires, including an uncontrolled fire that has consumed more than 4,000 acres near Red Lake.

The Green Valley Fire near Menahga has prompted evacuations and has damaged some structures in the area. They nearly doubled the estimated size of the fire to 7,100 acres this afternoon.

Canada – Alberta Wildfires – Update

The central Alberta wildfires remain out of control. Cooler temperatures and scattered showers overnight Monday helped firefighters keep two out-of-control wildfires threatening the hamlets of Lodgepole and Nordegg from growing.

Neither the Nordegg nor the Lodgepole fire is growing any farther, but they are both still considered out of control. There was some scattered rain in the centre of the province last night which helped, but it was far too little to make any significant headway in stopping the fire.

Biologists are working to contain an outbreak of avian botulism that has killed at least 2,000 birds in the North Portland wetlands, Oregon, USA.

100 whitetail deer have died near Janesville, in southern Wisconsin, USA in recent weeks from epizootic hemorrhagic disease.

Health officials in northern India report that a serious outbreak of Japanese encephalitis has infected hundreds of children. The viral brain disease, which can cause permanent disabilities and sometimes death, is a common seasonal disease in Asia.
