Hurricane Irma – Irma weakened Monday to a tropical depression as it moved through Georgia on its way to Alabama. It continues to dump heavy rain but all surge warnings have been cancelled. Irma has left behind dangerous floodwaters, power outages for millions of people and the debris it has made of human possessions across Florida. At least three people have died in Florida from causes related to Irma. Overall, The Associated Press is reporting more than 40 people have died from Irma’s effects. Flooding has been reported from Jacksonville and Charleston.

Croatia – Torrential rain has hit the Croatian Adriatic coast, triggering flash floods that have closed roads and left large areas without electricity. The downpour in the central Adriatic city of Zadar on Monday suspended school classes and flooded houses and hospitals. A river bridge was destroyed by surging waters. The storm has moved from north to south after triggering havoc in the Istrian peninsula over the weekend.

Irma Strands Manatees

As Hurricane Irma pounded Florida over the weekend, it brought drenching rainfall and historic flooding across the state, particularly along the shoreline.

But in Sarasota Bay in Manatee County, a pair of massive manatees were temporarily left high and dry.

A unique combination of storm conditions allowed Irma to siphon water away from the shore toward the storm’s center. This stranded a pair of manatees on the sand where they wallowed helplessly until a group of people came to their rescue
