Puerto Rico – Emergency officials in Puerto Rico raced on Saturday to evacuate tens of thousands of people from a river valley below a dam in the island’s northwest on the verge of collapse under the weight of flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Some 70,000 people live in a cluster of communities under evacuation downstream from the earthen dam on the rain-swollen Guajataca River. Residents of the area were being ferried to higher ground in buses. The rains sparked by Maria had cracked the dam and could cause fatal flooding.

Philippines – Heavy rains in Negros Occidental triggered by a Low Pressure Area have caused flooding and landslide in portions of Sipalay City on Friday. A three-foot high flood hit Barangay Cartagena causing some families to evacuate.


Wildfires – Canary Islands

Hundreds of people have fled their homes after a raging forest fire took hold of Gran Canaria. Terrifying 25ft flames towered close to luxury homes on the holiday island last night, which has forced evacuations and roads closures. Around 1,000 hectares on the island’s summit has been affected. Spanish newspapers have reported a badly burnt body had been found in the middle of a pine forest burned in the fire.


Yemen: Cholera

The cholera outbreak continues to spread in Yemen. 704,544 suspected cholera cases & 2103 deaths have been reported in less than 5 months. Two years of conflict in Yemen have wrecked people’s lives and left 15 million people without access to basic health care.

Venezuela: Measles

First is was malaria, then it was diphtheria, now health officials in Venezuela are reporting an outbreak of measles, according to El Carabobeno report. The vaccine-preventable viral disease that was eradicated from the country in 2014 has reared it’s ugly head in Ciudad Guayana, Bolivar State. To date, 38 confirmed and 88 suspect cases have been reported.

Chad: Cholera

The Chadian government said on Thursday that more than 50 people have died of cholera in Chad where authorities have since declared an outbreak. “We count 312 cases, including 52 deaths,” said the health ministry.

Botswana: Foot and Mouth Disease

Minister of Agriculture Development and Food Security has announced a suspected Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the Ngamiland area. The Department of Veterinary services in the Namanyane area, near Sehithwa Village on Wednesday detected some FMD symptoms in cattle.
