Japan _ Update – At least 141 people are now known to have died in floods and landslides triggered by torrential rain in western Japan, says the government. It is the highest death toll caused by rainfall that Japan has seen in more than three decades. Rescuers are now digging through mud and rubble in a race to find survivors, as dozens are still missing. About two million people have been evacuated from the region after rivers burst their banks. More than 70,000 rescue workers, including the fire service and the army, are involved in the relief effort.

Namibian Hepatitis E outbreak spreads

At least 15 people have died and 1,569 have contracted Hepatitis E in Namibia since the disease outbreak was confirmed in the capital Windhoek in December 2017. The outbreak has since spread from the capital to other administrative regions of the country. However, the cases are largely confined to five informal settlement in the Katutura local government area of Windhoek.

Rift Valley Fever – Uganda

Rift Valley fever (RVF) cases have simultaneously been confirmed in two districts in the western region of Uganda, with further ongoing investigation of another case in a third. At least 5 cases are being investigated.
