Hawaii – A major cold-season Kona storm system is bringing significant precipitation totals to Hawaii, including up to 25 inches of rain, a foot of mountain snow and hurricane-force winds on the summits of the Big Island. A rare blizzard warning was issued for Mauna Kea, whose nearly 14,000-foot summit was a winter wonderland over the weekend. Flood watches are up for the entire island chain, with flash flood warnings issued for the middle of the archipelago. Record cool temperatures are also visiting the nation’s 50th state, made to feel cooler by winds gusting up to 50 mph even in the lowlands. The dichotomous weather will make it technically possible to ski and surf in the same hour for residents of the Big Island.
Washington, USA- Near-record flooding in Washington State drowned cattle, demolished homes and damaged equipment. Broken supply chains are making it even harder to recover.
Wildfires – Record CO2 Emissions
Wildfires produced a record amount of carbon emissions in parts of Siberia, the United States and Turkey this year, as climate change fanned unusually intense blazes, the European Union’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service said on Monday.
Wildfires emitted 1.76 billion tonnes of carbon globally in 2021, Copernicus said. That’s equivalent to more than double Germany’s annual CO2 emissions.
Some of the worst-hit hotspots recorded their highest wildfire emissions for any January-November period since Copernicus’ dataset began in 2003, including parts of Siberia’s Yakutia region, Turkey, Tunisia and the western United States.
The countries with the 10 greatest number of Covid-19 cases:
Monkeypox – Nigeria
Nigeria has reported 23 confirmed monkeypox cases and 79 total cases in 2021 to date. Recent cases of monkeypox have been reported among US travelers returning from Lagos and Ibadan, Nigeria, prompting the CDC to issue a travel notice for Nigeria.
Botulism – Ukraine
In Sumy Oblast in northeastern Ukraine, four people were hospitalized with botulism after eating homemade canned mushrooms at a dinner in the city of Lebedin. The hospital only had one dose of anti-botulism serum, which was administered to the sickest patient. The others had to source their own serum on the private market outside the region!
