USA and Canada – Heavy rain, snowmelt and ice jams have caused widespread flooding in parts of Manitoba Province, Canada, and neighbouring North Dakota and Minnesota, USA, since late April 2022. The government of Manitoba reported that, since early April 2022, southern and southeastern Manitoba and the United States portion of the Red River basin have received 120 to 160 mm of precipitation, which is between 400 to 600 per cent of normal amounts. Ice jams along the Fisher River prompted a state of emergency for the Peguis First Nation on 28 April 2022. As of 02 May, as many as 1,000 people had evacuated. Roads, bridges and water infrastructure have all been adversely affected in the area and a boil water advisory has been issued. In North Dakota, the city of Valley City declared a flood emergency on 23 April 2022 due to the rising Sheyenne River. The river crested at 18.09 feet (5.514 metres) on 01 May, where Major Flood Stage is 17 feet (5.2 metres). In Minnesota, storms and heavy rainfall led to a state of emergency being declared. Several roads were temporarily closed in some locations, including Highways 92, 113, 220 and 317. The Sorlie Bridge in East Grand Forks was also closed to traffic. Flooding was reported in the city of Crookston and surrounding areas of Polk County after the Red Lake River broke its banks.

Spain – Firefighters and police rescued people from vehicles trapped in floods after a slow-moving storm brought very heavy rainfall to the Valencia Region in southeastern Spain on 03 May 2022. Several locations in the city of Valencia recorded more than 200 mm of rain in 24 hours to 03 May 2022. The weather station at Camins al Grau in the city recorded 260.9 mm. Other areas of the country have also seen severe weather in recent days. On 02 May, hail and heavy rain caused flooding and damages in parts of the Murcia Region. Hail and heavy rain also affected areas further north, including parts of the capital, Madrid. Madrid 112 reported 29 incidents, including 16 interventions for flood water clearance, mostly in Leganés and Móstoles.

Disease

Anthrax – South Sudan

Twenty people in Warrap state, in north central South Sudan have tested positive for anthrax. Samples from 20 patients suspected of anthrax were taken to Uganda for further laboratory tests.

Dengue Fever – Singapore

During the first four months of 2022, officials have reported 6,423 total dengue fever cases, already far exceeding last year’s total. One death has been reported.
