Wildfires – California, USA

A fast-moving brush fire near Yosemite National Park has exploded in size into one of California’s largest wildfires of the year, prompting evacuation orders for thousands of people and shutting off power to more than 2000 homes and businesses.

The Oak Fire started on Friday afternoon southwest of the park near the town of Midpines in Mariposa County and by Saturday morning had rapidly grown to 26.5 square kilometres, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Evacuation orders were put in effect Saturday for more than 6000 people living in the sparsely populated, rural area. By Saturday morning, the fire had destroyed 10 residential and commercial structures, damaged five others and was threatening 2000 more structures, Cal Fire said.

It added that 36,750 people had been evacuated from the region, although 12,000 had since been allowed to return.

Wildfires – Greece

Fierce wildfires are sweeping through the north, south and east of Greece on Sunday, as a scorching heatwave boils the country. Hundreds of residents and tourists have been evacuated from the east Aegean island of Lesbos after forest fires, which broke out yesterday, destroyed homes and threatened villages. Greece is currently in the grips of a heat wave with temperatures of 42°C expected in some regions. The extreme weather is forecast to last 10 days, raising fears of other fires.
