Storms and Floods

Tropical Storms – Roundup of Tropical Storms:

There are no current tropical storm systems.

Australia – Twenty-one people have been evacuated from the outback Queensland town of Urandangi ahead of a flooding event predicted to be the biggest the region has seen in more than 10 years. Heavy rainfall over the Barkly region further north, as a result of ex-tropical cyclone Ellie, is making its way down through the channel country resulting in this flooding. It is expected to take 10 days for the floodwaters to subside.

California, USA – Landslides closed roadways across California on Friday as the Golden State was hit with more rainy weather. A large area of moderate-to-heavy rain was moving inland from the Bay Area early Saturday morning, with widespread urban and small stream flooding expected to develop. Peak gusts will be 30-50 mph with strongest winds over mountains. With saturated soils, even moderate winds could cause downed trees/branches, power outages, falling debris. The atmospheric river storm was expected to bring more precipitation through the day, with the potential for flooding and multiple feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada.

Wildfires – Australia

More than ten firefighter crews as well as four aircraft are battling to contain an out-of-control blaze in the southwest of Western Australia. The bushfire was reported about 8km from Pinjarra near South Western Highway just after 2pm on Saturday. Firefighters from Ravenswood, Dandalup West, Pinjarra, Coolup, North Dandalup and West Murray are on the ground fighting the flames. They are being supported by two helicopters from above, as well as two water bombers.

Wildfires – Chile

Emergency crews are working to contain wildfires in Biobio Region as of early Dec. 31. Red (the highest level on a four-tier scale) alerts for the Los Angeles, Cabrero, Nacimiento, Santa Juana, and Yumbel communes were issued. Residents in La Huerta and Curamavida (Santa Juana) and Monterrey and El Peral (Nacimiento) have been ordered to evacuate. Emergency responders may implement road closures or order additional evacuations at short notice, depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the fires could cause poor air quality in the affected area. The fires could also lead to power supply disruptions.

Rabies – Mexico

The state of Oaxaca, in southwestern Mexico, reported 4 cases of human rabies in December 2022, an infection transmitted through the bite of wild animals. In Nayarit, on November 13, a 29-year-old woman was bitten by a domestic cat she owned , not vaccinated against rabies, which exhibited aggressive behavior and died three days later. Almost four weeks later, the patient began with nervous symptoms compatible with rabies,” the government reported.
