Diphtheria – South America

 

Through October 23 this year, four countries have reported confirmed cases of diphtheria: Brazil with one case, Haiti with 18 cases including 3 deaths, the Dominican Republic with 18 cases including 12 deaths and Colombia with one fatal case.

Diphtheria – India

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports 13 diphtheria cases through October in Ghaziabad district in Uttar Pradesh state, according to a TOI report. This compares to 14 cases in 2020. Two confirmed deaths were reported while two other fatalities are under investigation.

Diphtheria – Vietnam

The Vietnamese Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported today three people in Ky Son district were found positive for diphtheria bacteria in Huu Lap commune. Currently, the 3 patients are being treated at the Department of Tropical Diseases Hospital and are in good health.

Swine Flu – USA

Two human infections with novel influenza A viruses were reported. One infection with an influenza A(H1N1) variant (A(H1N1)v) virus was reported by North Dakota that occurred during the 2020-21 influenza season and one infection with an influenza (A(H3N2)v) virus was reported by Ohio that occurred during the 2021-22 influenza season. Both patients are <18.

Diphtheria – Vietnam

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a travel notice recently for Vietnam due to a diphtheria outbreak. Health officials in Vietnam have reported an outbreak of diphtheria in the Central Highlands region. National health authorities have reported 198 diphtheria cases since the beginning of this year.

Diphtheria – Vietnam

In a follow-up on the diphtheria outbreak in Vietnam, National health authorities are now reporting 198 diphtheria cases since the beginning of this year. This compares to 41 cases during the same period in 2019.

Diphtheria – Myanmar

Officials in Myanmar are reporting a diphtheria outbreak in eastern Shan State. Since the end of July, 36 cases of diphtheria have been treated at Kengtung People’s Hospital and five have died.

Ebola – DR Congo

The number of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cases increased by seven, bringing the total to 96 cases reported (including 92 confirmed and 4 probable) in Equateur province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Diphtheria – Vietnam

In a follow-up on the diphtheria outbreak in Vietnam, as of July 22, 2020, four provinces have recorded 114 cases of diphtheria in 34 communes, belonging to 14 districts. Three deaths have been reported.

Trichinosis – Russia

Russian officials report Thursday that 10 people from Altai Republic, near the Mongolian border, were hospitalized with trichinosis after consuming undercooked bear cub.

Diphtheria – Vietnam

In a follow-up on the diphtheria outbreak in Central Highlands province, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health is reporting 68 cases in the Central Highlands region.

Diphtheria – Vietnam

Health officials in Kon Tum Province in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam are reporting 12 diphtheria cases since early June. At least one death has been reported in a nine-year-old girl from Đắk G’long District.

Diphtheria – Haiti

Haitian health officials have reported 20 confirmed diphtheria cases, including 4 deaths through the end of April this year.

Malaria/Plague – Madagascar

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the number of malaria cases in the island country has risen in 2020 compared to 2019 numbers. Since the beginning of the year, malaria cases have increased with 663,558 cases recorded since January, including 398 deaths; compared to 402,385 cases in 2019 during the same period.

In some better news, after reporting huge numbers of measles cases in 2018 into 2019, measles cases have decreased with only 34 cases reported since January 2020. This is thanks to increased vaccination and surveillance efforts.

Diphtheria – South Sudan

In a follow-up on the diphtheria outbreak in Alsunta locality in South Darfur State, Sudan, the Ministry of Health in South Darfur State is now reporting 80 cases of confirmed diphtheria, including 10 deaths in Alsunta locality.

Dengue Fever – Brazil

The Bahia Department of Health (Sesab) reported 67,373 probable cases of dengue as of December 10, representing an increase of 622.6% over the same period of 2018, in which 9,323 probable cases were reported.

Leishmaniasis – Kenya

Health officials continue to report cases of the parasitic disease, Leishmaniasis in Kenya. During the week ending December 8, officials saw 34 additional cases. This brings the Leishmaniasis outbreak tally this year to 2,822, including 34 deaths. Most cases of leishmaniasis have been reported from Mandera, Marsabit, Wajir and Garissa counties.

Measles – DR Congo

UN health officials reported nearly an additional 10,000 measles cases in week 48 this year, bringing the outbreak total to 280,677, the most cases reported in any single country this year.

Diphtheria – Sudan

Health officials in Sudan are reporting an outbreak of diphtheria that began in August. From that time to date, Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) Sudan has seen a total of 63 suspected diphtheria cases with 11 associated deaths.

Measles – Samoa

Samoa health officials are reporting in a measles update that the there has been 4,460 measles cases since the outbreak started, including more than 100 in the past day. To date, 65 measles related deaths have been recorded, with 2 fatalities in the last 24 hours.

Syphilis – Canada

Officials with Alberta Health Services have reported a dramatic increase in syphilis cases in recent years with Edmonton accounting for the majority. In 2019 health officials put that number at 1753 cases in just the first 11 months. This is the highest number of cases in the province since the 1940s.

Diphtheria – Greece

The Greece National Public Health Agency reported this week on a rare diphtheria fatality. The case is an eight-year-old child who died on Nov. 26 at the General Children’s Hospital of Athens.

Scarlet Fever – UK

Hundreds of cases of scarlet fever have been reported across England and Wales in recent weeks, with almost double the amount of new infections in one week than the numbers recorded six weeks ago as the ‘old world’ disease continues to make a frightening comeback across the UK. The condition that caused misery for Victorian-era children is making a comeback after it was all but eradicated in Britain thanks to a century of medical advances and improved hygiene.

Local media in Edinburgh, Scotland are reporting that two people have been admitted to a local hospital being treated for diphtheria.

Chikungunya

Brazil – From the beginning of the year through July, Brazil health authorities have reported 97,900 probable cases of chikungunya in the country.

Thailand – In an update on the chikungunya situation in Thailand, the Ministry of Health reports that since the beginning of the year through August 4, 5,996 cases from 44 provinces have been reported, an increase of some 1,500 in about one month.

Measles – New Zealand

Officials with the Auckland Regional Public Health Service have reported some 100 additional measles cases during the past week. On August 13, officials were reporting 410 cases and this morning the total has risen to 507 with some 50 cases reported just over the weekend. Nationally, New Zealand’s measles total has reached 639 cases.

Crimea-Congo Haemorrhagic fever – Uganda

A confirmed case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) involving a 42-year-old businessman dealing in cattle has been reported from Kasagama Subcounty, Lyantonde District.

Malaria – Uganda

The Uganda Ministry of Health is reporting an increase in malaria cases in 2019. The cases of malaria have increased by over 400,000 cases when compared with 2018 and 2019 from about 1 million cases in June 2018 to 1.4 million in June 2019 (40% increase). However, it is worth noting that cases are still low compared to 2017 and 2016 in the same period.

Diphtheria – India

Health officials at the Government Fever Hospital in Hyderabad, Telangana state, India are reporting a surge in cases of the vaccine-preventable disease, diphtheria. According to a Times of India report, during the past two months they have seen 240 cases reported from Hyderabad, including seven death in just the past month.

Measles kill more people in DR Congo than Ebola

Measles has killed 2,758 people in the DR Congo since January, more than the Ebola epidemic in a year, medical NGO Doctors Without Borders said. The disease, preventable with a vaccine, has infected over 145,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo between January and early August.

Diphtheria – Venezuela

In an update on the diphtheria outbreak in Venezuela, the outbreak that began three years ago is ongoing. According to data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Venezuela has reported 324 diphtheria cases since the beginning of the year, including 15 fatalities.

Cholera – Yemen

Cholera cases have picked up dramatically in Yemen in 2019, in fact, during the first six months of this year, the total cholera cases are more than all of 2018. According to official data, Yemen saw 371,326 cholera cases, including 505 deaths in all of 2018. During the first six months (Jan. 1- Jun 30) this year, the total is 451,895, including 705 deaths.

Dengue Fever – Laos

The Laos Ministry of Health issued a warning this week as the trend of weekly reporting of dengue fever is increasing. According to a Vientiane Times report, health officials have advised people throughout the country to clear potential mosquito breeding sites as the current outbreak of dengue fever has claimed 27 lives and 11,561 people have contracted the virus so far this year through Sunday. Most of the infections and deaths were recorded in the capital and the southern provinces.
