Russia – Disaster authorities in Russia report that homes have been inundated and residents evacuated after flooding from the rising Amur river in Khabarovsk Krai in the Far East region. TOn 10 May the levels of the Amur River in the Khabarovsk Territory were rising as a result of snow melt and ice jams. On 10 May the Amur reached 6.3 metres at Takhta, Khabarovsk Krai, Russia. Danger levels are 5.5 metres. As of 12 May, over 60 homes were flooded in Nikolayevsky District, prompting some evacuations.

DR Congo – Long-term heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in parts of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with as many as 13,600 households affected according to the UN. Flooding has destroyed 4,240 houses and affected as many as 13,600 households in the province of Tanganyika, Democratic Republic of Congo. Thousands of families are homeless: some are living in public places (churches, schools), others are staying with host families. Over 100 schools have been destroyed, affecting nearly 39,600 pupils.

Ecuador – Thousands of people were left without drinking water after damaging floods Azuay Province in Ecuador from 25 December 2020. The Pungohuayco river broke its banks in Chordeleg canton, damaging homes, a bridge and water supply infrastructure. As many as 2,700 households were left without water supply. Flooding also struck in Gualaceo canton due to the overflow of the Guamincay river. At least 3 homes were severely damaged.

DR Congo – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) reported another incident of severe flooding in Uvira in South Kivu Province, the city devastated by flooding in April this year when over 30 people died. The recent flooding in the city occurred after torrential rain on 12 December 2020. 4 people died, 2 were reported missing and 2 were seriously injured. Heavy rainfall in western parts of the country in early December 2020 caused deadly flooding in the city of Mbanza-Ngungu in Kongo Central Province. 13 people died after torrential rain and strong winds overnight, 01 to 02 December, 2020. Four people were injured and several houses were destroyed or severely damaged. Five further fatalities were reported from 02 to 03 December after flooding in other areas of the city.

Madagascar – Tropical Storm Chalane made landfall in Madagascar on 27 December, bringing heavy wind and rains. A report of 28 December that the storm caused some isolated flooding and damage to electricity poles, but no significant damage. Toamasina recorded 351mm of rain in 24 hours to 27 December 2020. Maintirano in the northwestern Melaky Region recorded 131mm of rain the following day. Chalane weakened to a Tropical Depression as it crossed Madagascar, although heavy rainfall is expected to continue.

DR Congo – Heavy rainfall in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in early December 2020 caused deadly flooding in the city of Mbanza-Ngungu in Kongo Central Province in the western part of the country. 13 people died after torrential rain and strong winds overnight, 01 to 02 December, 2020. Four people were injured and several houses were destroyed or severely damaged. Five further fatalities were reported from 02 to 03 December after flooding in other areas of the city.

Italy – Wide areas of Italy have seen severe weather including strong winds, heavy snow and rain since 04 December. Evacuations have been carried out after flooding in Emilia-Romagna and Veneto Regions. Media report at least 2 weather-related fatalities. As of 07 December, the worst of the flooding was along the Panaro river in Modena Province in Emilia-Romagna region. Residents in Nonantola are particularly badly affected.

DR Congo – Flooding struck on 15 November in areas around the town of Sake after torrential rain caused a river to break its banks. Several houses and schools were destroyed. Other media reports suggest several people are still missing. Further heavy rain has affected areas of eastern DRC, in particular in South Kivu Province where 3 people died in Kalehe Territory, about 60km south of Sake. Local officials said 3 people died, several houses were destroyed and the RN2 national road, which links Bukavu to Goma, cut.

Georgia – Heavy rainfall from 01 October 2020 caused flash flooding and landslides in the Adjara region of Georgia. At least 5 people are thought to have died. A landslide struck in the village of Jocho, Khelvachauri municipality swept away a house and a vehicle, leaving several people missing. Heavy rain caused flooding in other areas of the region, damaging homes and other buildings.

DR Congo – Devastating floods struck in North Kivu Province of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo on 02 October, 2020. The provincial government reported at least 11 fatalities and several people still missing after flooding in the town of Sake, situated near Lake Kivu and close to the border with South Kivu Province. The search for missing people is ongoing and the death toll could rise further. Heavy rain on the steep slopes surrounding the town from 01 October caused the Mutahyo river to break its banks, sending raging flood waters, mud and debris sweeping through areas of Sake. Houses were washed away and school and health buildings damaged. Dozens of people are thought to be homeless. Bridges were destroyed and roads washed out, cutting connections between Sake and the provincial capital, Goma.

Mauritania – Flooding has affected the Assaba and Hodh Ech Chargui regions of Mauritania after days of heavy rainfall. The region has seen heavy rainfall since 01 September, resulting in floods in Bassiknou, Adel Begrou, Amourj and Néma. According to the Mauritania Red Crescent Society, flooding damaged infrastructure including bridges, river embankments and water supply. It is estimated that around 10,000 people from 1,380 households are affected, with over 700 people homeless. Three fatalities were reported.

Nepal – Nepal‘s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reports that over 30 people are dead or missing after landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rainfall in Bahrabise municipality, Sindhupalchok District, overnight 12 to 13 September 2020. According to the latest reports, 11 people have lost their lives and 20 are still missing. Five people have been injured. NDRRMA said that 17 families have been affected and 11 houses buried or swept away.

DR Congo – At least 50 people are feared dead after the tragic collapse of a mine in Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). The incident occurred on 11 September in a mine near the town of Kamituga in South Kivu province in the east of the country. Such accidents are common in DR Congo’s mining industry, which has poor safety standards. However, media reports suggest flooding caused the mine to collapse. Local observers said torrential rainfall in the area caused a nearby river to break its banks, flooding several tunnels in the mine.

Tunisia – At least 6 people have died in floods after days of heavy rainfall in Tunisia. Heavy rainfall began around 05 September when Kairouan, capital of the Kairouan Governorate in the north of the country, recorded 89mm of rain in 24 hours. Institut national de la météorologie-Tunisie issued wanings for further heavy rainfall on 13 September.

DR Congo – More than 10,000 homes were displaced in separate floods in the Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities said. The flooding submerged homes in Maniema province in the east, according to authorities. The River Congo burst its banks, forcing water into several villages in Maniema province, including Kindu. Meanwhile, 24 people were killed Friday by flooding in Uvira territory in South Kivu province that is also in the east, authorities said. Area administrator Kiza Muhato told the media 45 people were injured and 3,500 homes were destroyed when the Mulongwe River flooded. About 1,000 families were left homeless, according to reports.

Rwanda – Saturday and Sunday rains in Gatsibo district have reportedly claimed lives of three people, all the victims were washed away by extremely heavy floods.

USA – For the second Sunday in a row and continuing into Monday, the South is in the midst of an outbreak of severe weather, including widespread damaging winds, tornadoes, hail and torrential rainfall. Multiple waves of severe thunderstorms are underway or anticipated into early Monday from Mississippi to the South Carolina coast as a strong storm system rolls across the area. Flash flooding is accompanying violent storms in some areas. Initial reports indicate a number of tornadoes touched down in Mississippi.

DR Congo – At least 23 people were killed and dozens of others injured on Friday by floods in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The floods lashed out the city of Uvira, the eastern DRC’s South Kivu province. According to authorities, the heavy rainfall began Thursday night and continued through Friday, causing floods that have destroyed over 200 houses.

Malaysia – Several areas in Petaling Jaya were hit by flash floods after a downpour Thursday evening and among the worst affected was Kampung Chempaka with 75 houses inundated. Another area affected was Jalan 51A/223 in Section 51A. Thursday’s downpour was unusually heavy, so the sudden deluge of water resulted in an overflow of Sungai Penchala and drains in the Section 51A area.

DR Congo – More than 40 people have died from floods that have worsened the humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Over 876 000 have been affected by the floods that have hit 12 provinces (out of 25) in the country resulting in high risks of cholera outbreaks and a resurgence of diarrheal diseases. Poor hygiene conditions and water contamination raise such fears. The floods that claimed 41 lives have further exacerbated local populations’ vulnerabilities by rendering access to basic services such as schools and health centres inaccessible or destroyed.

Burundi – A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of 38 people in the Cibitoke province of northwestern Burundi. Out of total fatalities, 22 people died in Nyuempundu, 13 in Rukombe hill and three in Gikomero.

DR Congo – Heavy rain has flooded 10 provinces in the DRC, with more wet conditions forecast over the coming days. Nord and Sud Ubangui are among the most affected provinces and are also host to more than 130,000 Central African refugees. 260,000 people are affected in these two provinces, with an estimated 35,000 houses and 100 schools or health centres damaged or destroyed and 700 water points flooded.

La Nada

The U.N. weather agency said that neither El Niño nor La Niña conditions will emerge across the tropical Pacific Ocean during the next few months, but that doesn’t mean the world won’t experience freak and extreme weather.

World Meteorological Organization spokeswoman Clare Nullis told reporters that neutral ocean-temperature conditions will prevail through February.

DR Congo – Forty-one people died in the DR Congo capital Kinshasa after torrential overnight rains, with some swept away by landslides. Three of the city’s 26 districts were especially hit. A bridge connecting the districts of Lemba and Ngaba collapsed, and another was destroyed in the district of Kisenso. In Lemba, a gigantic hole appeared, about 10 meters (30 feet) deep and 20 meters (70 feet) across, where a road had been swept away. More than 300 homes have been flooded. There are many houses which have been destroyed.

Niger – 70,000 people have been affected by floods that have ruined homes and food reserves in Niger. The disaster has claimed over 40 lives and destroyed nearly 5,500 houses. Hitting during the country’s lean season, it has ruined livelihoods and precious food reserves.
