Thailand – Disaster authorities in Thailand report that flooding in southern provinces has affected over 300,000 households. At least 8 people have died in flash flooding in the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. As of 04 December, 302,110 households have been affected by floods across 67 districts in the 7 southern provinces. Heavy rain has been falling in the region since around 21 November.

South Africa – A series of storm cells wreaked havoc across parts of Buffalo City Metro and Mthatha late yesterday afternoon causing widespread damage to houses and leaving more than 20 people injured. In Mdantsane a storm followed by strong winds and hail ripped through NU6, NU7 and NU9, lifting roofs, flattening shacks and leaving scores of people without shelter. In Mthatha more than 20 people had to be rushed to health centres after they suffered injuries due to falling roofs and collapsing walls. Loose corrugated iron damaged cars in the Mthatha CBD.

Philippines – A flashflood caused by non-stop rains since New Year’s Day inundated several areas in Davao City. Flood water reached knee-deep and snarled traffic in barangays Bago Galliera and Puan Crossing.

USA – At least five people were killed Monday as severe storms swept across the South, spinning off several tornadoes and flooding widespread areas already drenched by heavy rain. Four people were killed in a single home when a tornado touched down Monday night in the town of Rehobeth in southeast Alabama. n DeFuniak Springs, Florida, the body of a 70-year-old man was found floating Monday afternoon in floodwaters outside his travel-trailer. The storm system drenched parts of Texas early Monday before moving east, causing significant damage from Louisiana to Florida. Much of the damage was caused by flash flooding after a series of storms left much of the region sodden over the past week.

Australia – A tornado in the New South Wales town of Dubbo has damaged at least seven houses, scattered debris and uprooted trees. Roads were flooded across Sydney and the Illawarra, with the emergency services rescuing people stranded in cars after driving into floodwaters.

Turkey – At least eight people have died and two are missing due to floods and landslides in Turkey’s Black Sea province of Artvin. Heavy rainfall has paralysed life in Artvin and its districts of Arhavi, Hopa and Borça. The main road linking the three districts has also been blocked to traffic due to the floods.

Kent, England – Dead rats are floating in the streets of Tunbridge Wells after flash floods swept the town last evening and more rain is expected to fall tonight.

New Zealand – The clean-up operation from the record flooding in the central North Island over the weekend could take up to a month. More than 400 people were evacuated from flood-hit homes in lower North Island towns across Taranaki, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Rangitikei and Whanganui over the weekend. Flooding caused road and bridge closures, cut power to homes, and forced people across the regions to spend the night in emergency accommodation or with friends and family. Several land slips were also reported. The flooding, described as a one in 85-year event, is the worst ever recorded in Whanganui – worse even than the lower North Island flooding of 2004.

Texas, USA – More rains that swept through North Texas over the weekend caused flooding that closed some roads, seeped into homes, and caused the collapse of the Hunt County bridge.

Lagos, Nigeria – Persistent rains in Lagos, especially in the last two days, have brought floods submerging cars and houses while buildings with weak foundations brought down. Affected areas in the state included Iju, Oshodi, Agege, Onipanu, Ketu, Yaba, Mushin and Abule Egba, Okota, Isolo, Ijora, some parts of Ikeja, Marine Beach, Ikorodu and FESTAC Town.

Brazil – Brazilian civil defence officials say more than 20,000 people have been affected by flooding in the city of Boca do Acre in Brazil’s northern state of Amazonas. The Purus River overflowed its banks a few days ago and flooded eight of the city’s nine neighbourhoods. 36 tons of emergency supplies including food, potable water, medicine, mattresses and hammocks have been distributed in the city of 31,000 people.

In the Eastern Pacific:

Tropical Storm Fausto is located about 1265 mi (2040 km) SW of the southern tip of Baja California.

In the Western Pacific:

Typhoon Neoguri is located approximately 379 nm southwest of Sasebo, Japan.

Neoguri has claimed life of a person and urged more than 500,000 people to evacuate in Okinawa region of Japan. More than 50,000 households in Okinawa have lost power.

Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency storm surge warning early Tuesday for Miyako island and adjacent islets in Japan’s southernmost prefecture of Okinawa.

Neoguri is expected to make landfall at Kyushu area in southwest Japan on Thursday.

According to the US’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Typhoon Neoguri is expected to be the most powerful typhoon to hit Okinawa island in Japan in 15 years.

The typhoon was named by the Republic of Korea. Neoguri means “raccoon dog.”

Typhoon Neoguri has weakens to Category 3, but is still a major flood threat to Japan. The outer spiral bands of Typhoon Neoguri are lashing the large southern Japanese island of Kyushu as the storm heads north at 15 mph towards Japan.

USA – Severe storms in United States have claimed lives of at least five people and left hundreds of thousands of people without power in New York and Pennsylvania. Four people died in Smithfield, a town between Syracuse and Utica in New York state. Storm at a church summer camp near Manchester, Maryland claimed life of a boy and injured eight other children. The storms have also left about 72,000 homes and businesses without power, most in central and northern New York.

New Zealand – Severe storm brings hurricane-force winds and flooding to Northland. The storm snapped concrete power poles and felled massive trees from Cape Reinga to Kaiwaka.

Climate

Conditions in the Pacific appear to be shifting towards the emergence of the El Niño phenomenon after a period of neutral conditions. El Niño has implications for drought and flood conditions throughout the world.
