A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of New Zealand, with some residents being told to evacuate, after a strong earthquake struck off the country’s coast on Friday (March 5), according to news reports. The powerful 8.1-magnitude earthquake occurred at 8:28 a.m. local time near New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands, which are part of New Zealand and lie about 500 miles (800 kilometers) northeast of the country’s main North Island. It was the third strong earthquake — higher than a magnitude 7.0 — to strike the region in a span of less than eight hours, and the strongest earthquake to hit globally in two years.

Greece – A fire-fighter died while carrying out flood rescues in north eastern Greece. The tragedy occurred in a village on the outskirts of Alexandroupolis in the Evros Region of Greece on 01 February 2021. Severe flooding was also reported further south in Izmir Province of neighbouring Turkey. Flash flooding was reported in other areas of the region, including in the city of Alexandroupolis and the town of Soufli.

Turkey – Heavy rain early on 02 February caused flooding in the city of Izmir and some surrounding districts, blocking roads and causing traffic disruption. Balçova district was among the worst hit areas according to local media.

Greece – Dozens of people were rescued in Greece after severe flooding on the island of Crete. Flash flooding struck on 10 November after days of heavy rain. Some areas saw more than 250mm of rain in 24 hours on 10 November. More heavy rain has fallen since. Flash flooding swept away vehicles and damaged roads and dozens of homes, mostly in northern parts of the island including the island’s capital, Heraklion. Schools were closed and residents were advised to stay indoors.

New Zealand – Record rainfall in has caused flooding in the city of Napier in New Zealand’s Hawkes Bay Region. NIWA Weather said Napier saw it wettest single hour on record when 54mm of rain fell between 17:00 and 18:00 on 09 November. A total of 242.4 mm of rain fell in the city in 24 hours to early 10 November – around 4 times the amount normally seen in November – making it the second wettest day on record for the city. The heavy rain brought widespread flooding, power outages and landslips.

Ireland – Local authorities in County Cork, south-western Ireland, reported extensive tidal flooding in coastal areas early on 20 October, 2020. Cork County Council said “storm surge coupled with spring tides have been the major contributory factors. A southerly wind direction and high wind speeds coinciding with high tides had the effect of increasing the tide significantly.” The towns of Bantry, Kinsale and Youghal were badly affected. However, areas of the city of Cork were among the worst hit.

Philippines – Disaster authorities in the Philippines report that more than 5,000 families on the island of Luzon in the north of the country have been affected by Tropical Storm “Saudel”, known in the Philippines as “Pepito”. The storm made landfall over Aurora Province then crossed the island of Luzon and continued west-northwest to the South China Sea.

Portugal – Civil Protection in Portugal have responded to over 1,300 calls for assistance after severe weather brought by Storm Barbara. Portugal saw strong winds and heavy rainfall from 19 October. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reported at least 7 locations across the country recorded over 90 mm of rain in 24 hours to 20 October. As much as 150mm of rain fell in Portalegre during that period.

Greece – Heavy rain was reported in the islands of southern Greece from 20 October. Heraklion, capital of the island of Crete, recorded 138.1mm of rain in 24 hours to 21 October, while Karpathos in the Dodecanese islands recorded 244 mm.

France – At least 2 people are missing after torrential rain triggered flash flooding in the Gard, Lozère and Herault departments of southern France. Meteo France reported violent thunderstorms hit the foothills of the Cévennes mountains on 19 September. In a 6 hour period, 196 mm of rain fell in Vigan, 175 mm in Saumane and 468 mm in Valleraugue, including 361mm in just 3 hours. Emergency services mobilized helicopters and hundreds of personnel to assist with evacuations and rescues. As of late 20 September, 46 people had been rescued and 421 had evacuated and moved to emergency shelter including over 200 people evacuated in Anduze commune in Gard Department.

Ghana – At least 5 people have died in recent flooding in Ghana‘s Upper East Region. Flooding during September affected 7,561 people and damaged 1,596 homes in several districts of the region. A further 156 homes have been destroyed along with wide areas of crops.

China – State media in China are reporting that nearly 180,000 people were affected by floods in the southwest Guizhou Province during mid-September. According to Xinhua News Agency, Guizhou Province witnessed its highest rainfall since 1961 during the period 09 to 18 September. Xinhua said that 52 county-level regions were affected by flooding and heavy rain. As many as 44,791 houses were damaged and 1,504 destroyed. Thousands of people evacuated their homes and were moved to 40 temporary relocation sites set up by the provincial government.

Greece – At least three people were killed and hundreds have been rescued in Greece after a rare storm system known as a “medicane” spawned severe flooding after making landfall on Friday, according to officials. The storm, named Ianos, hit the Ionian islands and western Peloponnese on Friday before lashing the rest of the country on Saturday.
