In the Southern Hemisphere: Tropical cyclone 08s (Cheneso) reconstituted briefly after making landfall in Madagascar, bring more heavy rain to the northern parts of the island.

Tropical cyclone 10p (Ten), located approximately 204 nm west of Noumea, New Caledonia, is tracking southeastward at 12 knots.

Brazil – Stormy weather over the last 2 days has caused fatalities and material damages in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. The state government said 26 municipalities have reported losses due to the storms of recent days and the cities of Rio Negrinho and Ascurra have declared a state of emergency. Emergency rescue teams using sniffer dogs are searching for two people who are still missing in a landslide in Rodeio. Three bodies were recovered from the site earlier on 19 January. Around 190 people have been displaced and the municipal authorities have set up an emergency shelter. Rodeio recorded 173.1 mm of rain in 12 hours to early 18 January 2023.

Hungary – Unusually heavy rains this month have caused flooding on several waterways in northern Hungary, with the water authority raising the alert as more rains, sleet and snow is expected for the weekend.

Hungary – Reports have emerged that devastating storm cells hit Eastern Hungary on 27 June afternoon, leaving 80 settlements affected by damages caused by strong wind and heavy rainfall. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), 2,560 rooftops (160 public and 2,400 private properties) were damaged. Trees fell on electrical aerial cables and caused blackouts in 93 settlements leaving more than 50,000 households without electricity for two or more days.

Nepal – Update -Flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have killed at least 45 people in Nepal in the past few days, with more deaths reported across the Himalayan border in India, officials said Sunday. At least 31 others are missing in Nepal, either swept by swollen rivers or buried by mudslides since delayed monsoon rains began pounding the region Friday. he center said nine key highways remained blocked by floods and mudslides and attempts are underway to open them up for traffic. Among them is the East-West Highway that connects the country’s southern districts. Other roads were being cleared by thousands of police and soldiers. Continuing bad weather has grounded helicopter rescue flights. Workers were also repairing fallen communication towers to restore phone lines. Twenty-eight people have been treated for injuries and more than 1,100 others rescued from flooded areas. More than 10,000 people are estimated to have been displaced.

Louisiana, USA – Tropical Depression Barry is still expected to bring as much as 6 to 12 inches of rain over south-central Louisiana as the slow-moving storm progresses. Areas in the Lower Mississippi Valley could see 4 to 8 inches and as much as 12 inches in some locations. More than 11 million people are under flash flood watches between the Gulf Coast and the southern midwest.

India – A massive landslide in Manikaran Sahib Gurdwara in Himachal Pradesh, India has claimed the lives of at least 8 people and injured 10 others.

Uruguay – Following a period of drought, Uruguay has been hit by two weeks of heavy rains causing floods that have forced a record 5,132 people, mostly children and elderly, to leave their homes and take refuge in government-assisted shelters where they are provided with food and accommodation, according to Uruguay’s news agency El Pais. While to date no casualties have been reported, the number of evacuees is expected to rise. Two weeks of heavy rains have caused the country’s rivers Olimar, Yi and Uruguay to rise above the level defined by authorities as safe and have provoked floods in different provinces. The floods come after a period of drought that forced Uruguayan authorities to limit the use of drinking water late July.

Hungary – A downpour in Budapest triggered flash floods in the Hungarian capital, disrupting electricity and snarling public transport.

Typhoon 09w (Chan-Hom), located approximately 68 nm of Taipei, Taiwan, is tracking north-northwestward at 10 knots.

Almost one million people have been evacuated from coastal areas in anticipation of the typhoon carrying wind speeds of 173km/h (107mph). Chan-hom’s path is expected to take it south of Shanghai later on Saturday. The storm left five people dead in the Philippines earlier in the week. It also hit Taiwan and Japan, uprooting trees and injuring several people.

Hungary – A severe storm in Hungary has claimed the life of one person and injured 29 others. The heavy storm uprooted trees, broke electric lines and damaged roofs.

India – Three members of a family were killed after incessant rain in Jammu in the early hours of Friday caused their vehicle to skid into a nullah. The rain also triggered flash floods in many areas of the state. Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force evacuated 28 BSF personnel marooned in flood waters near the international border in Ramgarh sector. The rains also triggered landslides that led to a blockade on the 300-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Gangroo near Ramsu.

Missouri, USA – Heavy rain recently pushed waterways in southwest Missouri out of their banks, briefly forcing scores of residents from their homes.

Heat Alert in Hungary

Hot, dry weather will arrive in the Carpathian Basin this weekend, with around 40C possible in western Hungary Sunday. The National Medical Office has issued a second-degree heat alert.

Tropical storm Yagi forms in the western Pacific about 487 nm south-southeast of Kadena Air Base, Japan. Appears headed for Honshu, Japan.

Floods in Southern China

Heavy rainfall in southern China has claimed the lives of at least 15 people. Flash flooding has affected nine provinces in southern and eastern China including Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi.

Central European Floods

The floodwaters have reached Hungary where frantic defense work is underway. There is a sense of siege in the capital Budapest, where river levels are expected to be at their highest early on Monday. Forecasters say levels could rise up to 8.85m (29ft) – about 25cm (10in) higher than the Danube’s previous record high in 2006. In a worst-case scenario up to 55,000 people may need to be evacuated.

Tropical Cyclone Mahasen was located approximately 562 nm south-southwest of Kolkata, India. Eight people have been reported killed and four others injured due to heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Mahasen in Andhra Pradesh, India. Cyclone Mahasen is predicted to cross between the Northern Rakhine (Myanmar)and Bangladesh Coasts on evening of 16th May. Flooding caused by Cyclone Mahasen in Sri Lanka has killed two and injured eight others.

Tornado in Hungary

A rare tornado in Hungary has injured at least two persons. The north-eastern regions of Hungary bordering on Romania is reported to be hardest hit by the tornado which damaged dozens of homes and knocked down power lines and trees.

A severe storm in Ghana which is currently at the Ghana-Togo border is expected to hit Greater Accra, other parts of Ghana today.

Disease

Hungary has tightened controls on maize designated as feed for dairy cows after discovering that some of the 2012 crop was contaminated by a toxin released by parasitical fungi.

No people have yet been poisoned by the M1 variant of aflatoxin, a potentially carcinogenic product of the Aspergillus fungi species, and samples analysed from milk available to consumers have all been negative.
