India – More severe flooding struck in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. Flooding in Madhya Pradesh, late August 2020. Photo: Government of Madhya Pradesh. Authorities report that at least 24 people have died and 11,000 were rescued after flooding struck from 28 August 2020. Torrential rain was reported in the state from 27 to 31 August. Hoshangabad (also known as Narmadapuram), recorded over 400 mm of rain in 24 hours to 30 August. ndia’s Disaster Management Division (DMD) said that over the last few days flooding affected 33,000 people across 1,906 villages of 28 districts in the state. A total of 11,197 homes have been damaged during this time.

Mexico – Heavy rain in Mexico in the wake of Tropical Storm Hernán has caused flooding in the states of Jalisco and Colima over the last few days. Evacuations were carried out in Cihuatlán and La Huerta in Jalisco and Manzanillo in Colima after floods and landslides from 27 August. In a 24 hour period to 28 August, El Chiflón in Jalisco recorded 229.5 mm of rain and Manzanillo in Colima 290.3 mm. Over 600 homes have been damaged in Jalisco, mostly in Cihuatlán and La Huerta municipalities. One person died as a result of strong winds in La Huerta.

Sudan – At least 84 people have died and 381,770 affected by heavy rains and flooding in Sudan since the start of the rainy season in July this year. More than 37,000 homes have been destroyed, forcing most of the families affected to seek shelter with relatives and host communities. Another 39,000 houses 34 schools and 2,671 health facilities have been damaged.

Kenya and Uganda – In Uganda, the government reported that rising water levels on Lake Albert and Lake Kyoga had displaced over 8,700 people in Buliisa, Nakasongola and Amolatar districts. Lake flooding has also affected parts of Kenya. The impending spill over of the Turkwel dam, could displace over 300,000 people.

Niger – Red Cross Society of Niger (RCSN) reported that as many as 868 houses were destroyed by flooding of the Niger river in Niamay that began 23 August. A total of 2,283 households (approximately 15,981 people) have been affected with many of them displaced and taking refuge in local schools or host families. One fatality was reported. The Niger river at Niamey reached 6.69 metres on 28 August 2020. Danger mark here is 6.2 metres and the previous record high was 6.4 metres.

Mexico – eavy rain began around 20 August 2020. The rain intensified over the follwingg days, with Escuintla in Chiapas recording 186.4 mm of rain in a 24 hour period to 23 August and Ixtepec in Oaxaca 140.2 mm. Alvarado in Veracruz recorded 113.7 mm in 24 hours to 25 August. Civil Protection in Chiapas reported that the Doña María river broke its banks, flooding more than 400 homes in Acapetahua municipality. One fatality was reported after flooding in the city of Tapachula. Flood rescues were carried out in Acacoyagua Municipality.

South Sudan – Rivers have broken their banks in South Sudan, leaving thousands displaced by flooding. In Jonglei State, the White Nile has caused flooding in Bor South, Twic East, Duk and Ayod counties. Media reports suggest over 200,000 people have been displaced. Thousands of homes have been reportedly destroyed, along with crops and livestock. Flooding struck in Bor Town in late July when a dyke along the White Nile collapsed. Further north along the White Nile, an estimated 30,000 people have been affected by flooding in Renk County in Eastern Nile state. Meanwhile the overflowing Akobo River which runs along the country’s border with Ethiopia has caused flooding in Pochalla County in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. Crops have been destroyed and families displaced.

Mexico – Heavy rainfall from 08 to 10 August caused flooding and landslides in the state of Veracruz in eastern Mexico. 110.3 mm of rain fell in 24 hours on 08 August in Sontecomapan in Catemaco Municipality. The next day, 158 mm of rain fell in Jesús Carranza Municipality. The state’s Civil Protection reported 3 fatalities after a landslide in Filomeno Mata Municipality. Across the state more than 1,700 buildings were damaged and around 200 people were evacuated. Bridges were damaged and several roads blocked by landslides and flooding, leaving some communities isolated.

Australia Severe weather including strong winds, heavy rainfall and damaging surf has been affecting parts of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia over the last 2 days. Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said a coastal low that has spent the last few days tracking down from the north. “After hammering the Far North, then Central Coast, the Hunter and Sydney, now it’s Illawarra and far south feeling the impacts. This afternoon has seen rain and wind gusts of 113 km/h at Ulladulla and 96 at Kiama km/h.”

Pakistan – Heavy rainfall in Pakistan has caused severe flash flooding in the city of Karachi and triggered a deadly landslide in Punjab. Drainage systems were overwhelmed and several parts of the city and surrounding areas were flooded. Power lines were downed and buildings damaged or destroyed. Local media reported that at least 10 people had lost their lives as a result of either electrocution or structural collapse. Meanwhile in the province of Punjab, 3 young people died and one was injured after heavy rain triggered a landslide in Orakzai District on 27 July, according to NDMA.

India (Bihar) – Authorities in India report that major rivers are at severe flood stage in 19 locations in the state of Bihar in the north east of the country. Wide areas of the state are under water and Indian Air Force helicopters have been deployed to drop flood relief materials including food and fresh water to remote and cut off locations. According to reports of 25 July from Bihar’s Disaster Management Department, 960,000 people have now been affected by floods across 10 districts. The Department reported 10 fatalities as a result of flooding.

India (Assam) – Over 2.4 million people are currently affected by monsoon flooding in the state of Assam, north eastern India. Assam State Disaster Management Agency (ASDMA) reported flooding in 2,265 villages and localities in 23 of the state’s 33 districts.

Thailand – Monsoon rain has caused flooding and landslides in northern, central and eastern areas of the country over the last 10 days. Dozens of homes have been damaged, along with roads, bridges and dams. However, no injuries or fatalities were reported. The worst hit areas are Lampang Province and Pathum Thani province.

USA, Mexico – Hurricane Hanna made landfall in southern Texas as a Category 1 system on 25 July 2020. The storm weakened as it moved west but brought torrential rainfall to parts of northern Mexico where 2 people have died and 6 are missing. Mexico’s disaster management authority, Centro Nacional de Prevención de Desastres (CENAPRED) reported on 27 July that Hanna had caused considerable material damage, mainly in the states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Nuevo León.

Yemen – At least 17 people have lost their lives in recent floods in Yemen during 22 – 25 July. 3 people died after heavy rains in Bani Qais district in Hajjah Governorate washed away dozens of huts and tents in camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Elsewhere, flooding caused material damages in Lahj, Shabwah and Abyan governorates. Heavy rain also affected the capital Sana’a, with flooding reported.

Bangladesh – Government and humanitarian agencies in Bangladesh report that 3.3 million people have now been affected by flooding that began in June. According to a report of 25 July by the Humanitarian Coordination Task Team (HCTT), 21 districts of the country have now been affected, with 16 of them seeing moderate to severe impacts. Flooding has inundated over 34,000 km2 of land, which amounts to 24% of the country. Almost 75% of Jamalpur district is flooded. Over 90 people have died in flooding since 30 June, including 41 children. Approximately 56,000 people have been displaced to 1,086 flood shelters.

Nigeria – At least 7 people have died in flash flooding and heavy rainfall in Niger state in central Nigeria. Local media reported torrential rainfall lasting several hours late on 24 July caused flooding and damage in Rafin Sanyi area of Suleja Local Government Area. Rain and flooding downed trees and power lines, causing electricity outages. According to a local government spokesperson, several houses collapsed in the area, trapping people in their homes. As of 25 July, 7 bodies had been recovered but more are feared missing. Rescue and recovery teams have been dispatched in the area in the search for survivors.

Vietnam – At least 5 people lost their lives after heavy rainfall from 20 July triggered flooding and landslides in northern Vietnam. Vietnam’s Disaster Management Authority reported flooding and landslides in Ha Giang and Cao Bang Provinces. Ha Giang City recorded 378mm of rain in 24 hours to 21 July, while Dao Duc recorded 395 mm and Cao Bo (both in Ha Giang Province) 401 mm.

USA, Mexico – As it weakened to a tropical storm Sunday morning, Hanna pushed inland through the Rio Grande Valley, leaving flooding and damage in its path in a wide swath of South Texas and northern Mexico.

India – More than 100 animals, including 10 one-horned rhinoceroses, have died in massive flooding at the famed Kaziranga game reserve in northeastern India, officials said. The flooding is the result of a monsoon that has dumped rain across parts of India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Venice, Itlay – A quarter of Venice has been submerged by a near-record high tide for June, a time of year when such flooding is rare. The water level in Italy’s lagoon city reached 116 centimeters (3 feet, 9.7 inches) late Thursday, the third-highest mark for June. That level indicates that around a quarter of Venice has been flooded. Venice’s sea monitoring agency blamed the unusually high late spring tide on a storm in the Atlantic that brought heavy winds and rain to northern Italy. Another unseasonably high tide is expected Friday night.

Cuba – Cuba suffered several hydrometeorological events that reached their highest intensity on 25 and 26 May 2020. Heavy rains, floods and strong winds particularly affected the central Cuban Provinces of Camaguey, Ciego de Avila, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spiritus and Villa Clara. On 25 to 26 May, a severe local storm brought tornados, hail falls, waterspouts and linear winds over 92 km/h.

Yemen – Floods swept through Yemen amid heavy seasonal rains, leaving at least 16 people dead and flooding dozens of homes, security officials said Thursday. The casualties were reported in eastern Hadramawt and southern Shabwa provinces, where it began raining late Wednesday, said the officials, At least 25 houses were flooded and hundreds of livestock killed in Hadramawt, the officials said. Yemeni military planes have been rescuing residents trapped in valleys by the flooding

Mexico – Heavy rain and winds from Cristobal caused more damage and forced evacuations Thursday in parts of Mexico. One person died in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas in the state of Chiapas. The heavy rain also washed out part of bridge in Pichucalco in Chiapas, cutting off two farming communities. In addition to Chiapas, the storm also caused damage in Campeche, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Landslides were reported in 15 cities in two states.

Mexico – Tropical Storm Cristobal is already bringing damaging and deadly flooding to parts of Mexico and Central America and it is forecast to bring heavy rainfall over southern Mexico and parts of the Yucatan Peninsula this week. The Pacific Coast from Chiapas to Guatemala and El Salvador will also see heavy rainfall, which could cause widespread life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

Uganda – Gardens, roads, and homes in five sub-counties of Dokolo district have been submerged by the rising water levels of Lake Kwania, making over a thousand families homeless. The people affected have moved to higher grounds as the devastating floods continue to wreak havoc in the district.

Nicaragua – Tropical Storm Cristobal has brought flooding to Managua and surrounding areas. More rain is expected.

Mexico – Even before Cristobal strengthened into a tropical storm Tuesday, drenching rains had already forced evacuation orders in parts of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Thousands of people have taken refuge in shelters. The rain, produced by remnants of Tropical Storm Amanda and the tropical depression that would become Cristobal, caused damage in Yaxcabá and Tiholop in the state of Yucatán.
