Qatar – Qatar was hit by widespread flash flooding on Saturday as the desert state received almost a year’s worth of rainfall in one day. oads became impassable, air traffic was disrupted and homes were flooded, while shops and universities closed.

Israel – Heavy rain in the south of the country caused floods Saturday evening in Eilat and the Arava region. As a result, Eilat airport closed, and road 90 was blocked.

Trinidad – The rainfall that caused a historic level of flooding in parts of north and central Trinidad largely spared the south part of the island. Flash flooding inundated roads and homes.

Pakistan – At least 11 people were killed and scores more were injured in flash floods triggered by heavy rains in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, officials said Sunday. “Heavy rainfall on Friday triggered flash floods which swept away mud houses Lasbela district of Balochistan causing damage to life and property,” an official said. Poorly built homes across Pakistan, particularly in rural areas, are susceptible to collapse during the annual spring and monsoon rains in July-August, which are often heavy.

Trinidad & Tobago – It took about an hour of midday rainfall yesterday for flash floods to inundate parts of Port of Spain and surrounding hillside communities.

Vermont, USA – Localized flash floods are affecting many areas of the state and have interrupted Amtrak rail service in Vermont on Sunday. Flood waters have since receded in some affected areas. However, some roads have experienced damage and remain closed or restricted.

China – Floods in southern China have killed at least 15 people over the past few days and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands more. In Guangxi region, seven died and three were missing following torrential rains, with more than 23,000 people being evacuated to safer areas. In neighboring Hunan province, more than 300,000 people have been evacuated and eight people have died. More rain is forecast in coming days, according to the China Meteorological administration.

Trinidad – Torrential overnight rainfall has flooded some low lying areas of south Trinidad for the second time this week. Major flooding is being reported in the villages near the rivers feeding the Guaracara river which drains an area between Tabaquite and Marabella. There are reports of at least one hundred displaced families living in Williamsville. Some people had to flee their homes during the night as the water came in. Water is also rising in low lying areas of Barrackpore.

6.5 Earthquake hits northern Sumatra, Indonesia.

A strong undersea earthquake rocked Indonesia’s Aceh province early on Wednesday, killing nearly 100 people and sparking a frantic rescue effort in the rubble of dozens of collapsed and damaged buildings. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said 273 people were injured, about a quarter of them seriously. Some 245 buildings were seriously damaged or destroyed, mostly in Pidie Jaya, including 14 mosques and the remainder largely dwellings and shop houses. Roads also cracked and power poles toppled over. There is an urgent need for excavation equipment to move heavy debris and emergency supplies.

The US Geological Survey said the shallow 6.5-magnitude earthquake that struck at 05:03 (22:03 GMT on Tuesday) was centred about 10km north of Reuleut, a town in northern Aceh, at a depth of 17km. It did not generate a tsunami.

For Acehnese, the quake was another terrifying reminder of their region’s vulnerability to natural disasters. More than 100 000 people died in Aceh after the December 26, 2004, earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami.

Four people died in Costa Rica during the devastation of Hurricane Otto, whose epicentre has now moved into the Pacific Ocean, while Nicaragua’s Cardenas municipality on the Costa Rican border awoke Friday morning unable to contact the outside world, without electricity and with overflowing rivers.

In the West Pacific: Tropical storm 29w (Tokage), located approximately 196 nm west-southwest of Manila, Philippines, is tracking northwestward at 11 knots.

Italy – Authorities have issued flood warnings across northern Italy as heavy rain has led to widespread flooding. Many rivers have overflowed. The swollen River Po, Italy’s longest, burst its banks in Turin after 171mm of rain fell in just three days. In the 24-hour period up to 06:00GMT on Friday, the city recorded 116mm of rain compared with the November average of only 77mm. Homes were evacuated and schools and public businesses closed in northwestern Italy on Thursday as heavy rain caused the Tanaro River to overflow. Flood warnings have been issued in the regions of Liguria and Piedmont, which have been hardest hit. The bad weather struck the area, sending torrents of waves through the Tanaro and on to river banks and streets.

Brisbane, Australia – Heavy rainfall and widespread flooding has battered south-east Queensland. Stationary storms made their way down the Queensland coastline with bayside suburbs in Brisbane recording almost 100 millimetres of rainfall. Brisbane Airport copped 97 millimetres of rain, mostly between 6am and 7am while Redcliffe received 87 millimetres on Saturday.

Trinidad and Tobago – Citizens throughout Trinidad are today bracing themselves for more flooding with reports of heavy rains. There have been complaints throughout the country and reports of rising flood waters. There are reports that some residents in Mayaro and Rio Claro had to leave their homes while some were marooned due to flood waters yesterday.

Hazards affecting land – rainfall…Simon is expected to produce total rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches with isolated amounts around 15 inches over the next several days across Baja California Sur. These rains could cause flash flooding and mudslides. Surf…swells generated by Simon are affecting portions of the southwestern coast of Mexico. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Typhoon 18w (Phanfone), located approximately 474 nm south of Iwakuni, Japan, and is tracking northwestward at 10 knots.

Typhoon 19w (Vongfong), located approximately 211 nm northeast of Chuuk, Fsm, and is tracking west-northwestward at 14 knots.

Tropical cyclone Lehar is located approximately 215 nm east-northeast of Chennai, India.

The very severe cyclonic storm Lehar weakened to a cyclonic storm Wednesday, as wind speed fell to 90 kmph from 180 kmph, hours before landfall expected on Thursday. It changed direction and may now make landfall as a cyclonic storm between Machilipatnam and Nellore, India.

Winter storm Boreas – Heavy snow piled up Wednesday in parts of the Northeast and Appalachians while rain drenched locations closer to the coast as a winter storm disrupted millions of travellers heading out for Thanksgiving. Nationwide, nearly 475 flights had been canceled and more than 3,600 had been delayed as of late afternoon. Some of the worst delays were at Philadelphia and the three New York City area airports. Although the storm will be long gone by Thursday morning, howling winds in its wake could spell trouble for some of the big balloons at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York City. Snow fell in the Appalachians and portions of the interior Northeast. Snow was reported falling as far south as Atlanta. The city picked up 0.4 inch of snow, which was only the third time measurable snow fell there in November since 1930. Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories remained in effect as of late afternoon Wednesday in the central and southern Appalachians, portions of northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania, upstate New York and northern Maine. More lake-effect snow was forecast to fly on Thursday around the Great Lakes. Flood watches also remained in effect for drenched eastern portions of the Northeast. Earlier Wednesday, the weather service confirmed that an EF-2 tornado hit Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, injuring two people. This was the same storm that blitzed the Southwest earlier in the week, killing at least 12 people in traffic accidents. More than 43 million people were expected to travel over the long holiday weekend.

A landslide at an open pit coal mine in north China’s Shanxi Province has claimed lives of at least three people and buried four others.

Rainfall swept across Trinidad for most of yesterday, causing floods in Monkey Town, Barrackpore, Ste Madeleine, Debe, Penal, Otaheite and Cross Crossing.

Two people suffered minor injuries when the roof blew off their condominium in Atlantic Beach along the North Carolina coast in what the National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday as a tornado.
